  1. The Power of Social Media
  2.
  3.
  4. Just before the Revolution, Kahled Said was murdered by Egyptian Police. When a light sentence was handed down, the people of Egypt began to unite in his defense. What was different this time after decades of oppression?
  5.
  6. The difference was the internet and social media. Because of a Facebook page in memory of Khaled Said, Twitter, and YouTube the regime could no longer lie to the people of Egypt. Protests began to erupt; facilitated by these social media outlets.
  7.
  8. It did not stop there. As the revolution progressed social media became such a powerful weapon for the people Mubarak shut down the internet to Egypt, except for military use. Thanks to Telecomix, Commander X, and Anonymous the internet was restored to the people. This process happened twice, then Mubarak had the fiberoptic cable carrying internet service to he whole country disabled.
  9.
  10. Social media is equally important for Occupies in the US, and greater importance to the Global Awakening. Social media has been the actual media since the protest began at Liberty Square. My Facebook page has grown at an amazing rate, considering it is merely a mirror for my Twitter feed. Until our hero Lt Pepperspray made use of vegetables in such a disgraceful way, social media was almost the exclusive carrier of Occupy news. Although I must give credit to Al Jazeera for amazing OWS coverage.
  11.
  12. The internet is our most powerful weapon against the forces that oppress us. We must us it to unite locally, regionally, nationally, and globally. Reach out to those far and near. Embrace our differences and learn from each other.
