Praise be the writing gods because I’m finally getting around to doing a Phantom of the Opera audio. God, this one has been going around in my head for YEARS, but more intensely the last few months. The “Wandering Child” sequence has always been a favorite of mine. It’s sensual, it’s romantic, but it’s dominating and controlling. Everything I love!

With this script, it’s an in-depth look as to what probably would have happened if foppy Raoul didn’t show up. I was always angry Raoul ruined a perfectly beautiful moment. Well, it wasn’t entirely beautiful. It’s a desperate, intense scene as the Phantom is trying to make his last stand. Poor Christine is just trying to figure out what her heart is telling her and she can’t without someone else’s help. The Phantom uses that to his advantage. Guilt, regret, and any other negative feelings he may have had are out the window at this point. HE WANTS HER DESPERATELY and he’ll do WHATEVER he can to have her.
Christine on the other hand, i.e. the listener, just goes along with the Phantom’s manipulation because she can’t help it. Deep down, she wants someone to control her, guide her, because she is SO insecure in herself. She’s trying to deny him, trying to keep him out of her head because she’s been told surrendering to him is bad. He’s shown her his true face and she knows he’s not what she dreamed, but in this moment, he can be. Everything she’s struggled with can go away in this one moment if she allows it.
There’s an aspect of the Phantom that is really poignant in Susan Kay’s adaptation Phantom (if you haven’t read it, I highly suggest you do. It’s phenomenal). She really dives in to the fact that the Phantom trained as a magician of dark arts. Magicians and the power they can have over mind control and manipulation is something that’s always been kind of a turn on for me and I really want the chance to use that with the Phantom in this script.

PHANTOM: [whispery, pity] Wandering child….so lost…so [breath] helpless. Yearning for my guidance….
PHANTOM: [mocked pain] Dear, dear child…have you forgotten your angel so quickly? The divine messenger who brought music to you and gave you the wings to soar?
PHANTOM: Cherished Christine, you have been aimlessly drifting from your path. Your path to become a tremendous singer, the woman your father always wanted you to be. [Contented breath] An angel among the heavens!
PHANTOM: [pained, slowly] Your path from me.
PHANTOM: [angry, through clenched teeth, growly] You have flown far from me! I have lost you to the winter! The winter that has made you so cold that you have forgotten me! Forgotten the gift I have given you, the gift of the gods!
PHANTOM: [ice in your voice, you can’t STAND Raoul. You have IMMENSE hatred for him] That…OBNOXIOUS imbecile, the Vicomte de Chagny…he continues to poison your mind, telling you that I am nothing but a demon! An angel of darkness brought to this world to only create chaos and destruction.
PHANTOM: [continue the anger] He has taken you from me! Injected lies into your mind! [fierce anger] You close your eyes and turn from my voice, but you know it to be true!
PHANTOM: [sly, you’re trying to influence her, control her] But…dear, sweet, Christine. You know that is not true. You know me, you know me. You know I would never hurt you…
PHANTOM: Have I not been the one who supported you? Gave you comfort when you needed it most? Have I not been the friend and confidant you have always needed?
PHANTOM: They are wrong to put such lies in your head, Christine. They are wrong to tell you that I am a monster, that I want to control you…
PHANTOM: [scoff, angrily] By the way you are breathing so heavily, so irregularly, you are lingering upon that thought! You will discredit me and all that I have done for you?
PHANTOM: [DESPERATE AS FUCK] Christine, will you not see that this-this...BOY is trying to corrupt your mind? He, Madame Giry...they want to deprive you of the longing you seek.
PHANTOM: [subtly, softly] The longing to be with me…
PHANTOM: [STRONG STRONG STRONG] Your soul is yearning to be with me, Christine, but your mind is forcing you against it because of their influence! This bitter fog that has continued to isolate you from me grows by the minute! Farther and farther my gaze retreats from you and I am heartbroken, Christine! You have broken your angel of music’s heart!
PHANTOM: [Punishingly] You continue to deny me and what your soul is anguishing for. The sorrowful look in your eyes is admittance enough!
PHANTOM: You have turned your back on true beauty, Christine! The beauty of your angel!
PHANTOM: [Fiercely] I scarcely can take it no longer, Christine! Do not SHUN me! Do not REJECT what your desires tell you!  DO NOT WANDER FROM ME ANY LONGER!
[pause]
[Low growl]
[Slow inhale, slow exhale]
*PHANTOM BEGINS TO CAST A SPELL ON HER THROUGH THE USE OF HIS VOICE. I LEAVE IT UP TO YOU IN TERMS OF HOW THE LISTENER SHOULD FEEL LIKE THEY’RE FALLING INTO A TRANCE LIKE STATE ALONG WITH CHRISTINE*
PHANTOM: [HYPNOTICALLY] Come to your strange angel….
PHANTOM: [soft, evil chuckle] Yess….listen to my voice, Christine…let it pierce you and entrance your senses…come to me….[slow, whisper] Come. To. Me.
PHANTOM: [HYPNOTICALLY] I am your angel of music…come to me, angel of music…
PHANTOM: [Soothing] My hand is reaching out to you, Christine…merely take it and everything you desire is yours…
PHANTOM: [HYPNOTICALLY] I am your angel of music…trusssst me, your angel of music.
PHANTOM: [deep, maniacal chuckle. Satisfied gasp as she takes your hand. Her hand feels so warm in the cold and it sends a shiver down your spine] Good…girl, Christine…
PHANTOM: [moan] Mmm…that’s right, darling…let my cloak enwrap you…feel it closing in around you.
PHANTOM: Feel my warm arm surround your waist and bring you closer to me. Let me cup your chin in my hand…my gloves heating your already flushed face….
PHANTOM: Let me…look at you….[gentle chuckle]
PHANTOM: [sharp whisper] look in to my eyes, Christine….[slowly] Look. Deep. Into. My. Eyessss…

PHANTOM: No going back now….[sinister laugh]
