  1. Describe the setting of the novel. What evidence is provided about when and where this text takes place?
  2. The story takes place in a doctor’s office in Portland, Oregon. The year must be some time in the early 2000s because in the book, the doctor says “back in the ‘89s”, which gives us a small clue, showing that the story takes place a bit earlier than that.
  3.
  4. Describe George’s character. By what methods does Le Guin characterize him? Explain.
  5. George Orr is just a normal person who might have passed by while walking down the street without noticing him because nothing really stands out, but at the same time, he has a superpower which is that he is able to change reality with his effective dream while sleeping. He seems to be a very sad/depressed person who just wants to stop seeing these dreams that can affect the real world.
  6.
  7. Describe Dr Haber’s character. By what methods does Le Guin characterize him? Explain.
  8. Dr. Haber is an oneirologist, a person who studies dreams, and knows how to hypnotize people. He is really into oneirologist because when he starts explaining to George about dreams he uses a lot of scientific words and says it all with enthusiasm. He also likes power. When he finds out that George is a weak person and that he is able to hypnotize George and manipulate his dreams to Dr. Haber’s liking, it really makes him excited. He also puts all of his time and effort into this field because he stays awake all night examining George even though he is very sleepy.
  9.
  10. How is the dynamic between these two characters established and to what effect? Explain.
  11. When Dr. Haber and George interact, Dr. Haber uses Georges weakness, which being an introvert who doesn't really speak much, to convince him to do what Dr. Haber wants. For example, after the first appointment, Dr. Haber wanted George come again on a Friday, but George made an excuse, but Dr. Haber them said that he has to come on the weekend. George does not want to go, but he feels like Dr. Haber has more power and therefore, George is not able to say something opposing to what Dr. Haber wants him to do.

  16. What do you feel is the most significant moment in the text to this point? Why?
  17. I think the most significant moment in the text is when George starts to visit Haber frequently because Haber wants to use George as test subject for his new experiment, which is to test out his machine which is not certified and then experiment with Georges power. Haber is pretty much using George instead of treating him as a patient. It is also very obvious that Haber is very desperate/determined to get more results and tests because he is sacrificing his own health (sleep) to experiment with George at late hours.
  18.
  19. What have emerged as significant themes thus far in the text? Explain.
  20. The most significant theme so far in the text is power and manipulation, which can also be reflected from the title of the book, The Lathe of Heaven. So far in the text we have seen that the doctor really likes to have power over someone who is weak and use them to his own benefit. When George goes the doctor due to legal reasons, the doctor uses his power to make George come to him a few more times and then when he does come, the doctor manipulates the patient’s dreams to test it’s limits, while not caring about how this is affecting George because he is lost person who has problems when it comes to sleeping and controlling his dreams.
  21.
  22. What significant structural choices does Le Guin make to convey meaning? Explain.
  23. Most of the text in the novel so far has been dialog between George and Haber. At times we do get a narration, but it is not a constant narrator. It switches between George and Haber. Le Guin has made Haber speak way more when compared to the amount George speaks. This is done to show what kind of people they are. For example, Haber a lot and it feel like he rushing everything that he says because he does not want to waste time and wants to do his experiments. From the way George talks, we can see that he is very introverted and a little helpless/clueless, he just follows what others tell him to do.
  24.
  25. What strands of imagery have emerged thus far in the text and what is the effect of each’s presence? Explain.
  26. In the beginning of the novel, there is an imagery of a jellyfish. It is described that the jellyfish is just floating in the sea and the strong waves of the ocean controls the direction which the jellyfish goes. The jellyfish is like George, just drifting here and there and does what is being told by haber.

  31.
  32. What signficant symbols have been set up in this section? What is their suggested meaning?
  33. The jellyfish in the start of the book symbolises George’s mind because the ocean, who is Haber is manipulating George’s mind just like the ocean is overpowering the jellyfish. The jellyfish is drifting in the water, and George, like the jellyfish is just drifting around the world and listening to Haber’s commands. He knows that Haber means only good, but at the same time he feels like Haber is using his power to control and use George.
  34.
  35. How would you characterize the language used in the text? Explain and provide examples.
  36. A lot for the language used throughout the text is very scientific. That is because the one who is speaking the most is Haber and everytime he speaks, it is usually something to do with the so called treatment he is performing on George or the machine he has created and is testing on George. An example of these scientific words are “s-sleep” and “d-sleep” and some other words as well, when he explains to Haber what he will be doing and what the machine does. The use of these words makes trust Haber because we feel like he is very smart and is a greater person than us. But all he is doing is being oversmart.
  37.
  38. Predict the outcome of the novel.
  39. I think the outcome of the novel will be that Orr’s doctor, Haber will use Orr’s power for his own use. Since Orr is very quiet person, Haber will use his loud voice to show power and manipulate Orr’s brain to dream of things that Haber wants to change. He could go so far to even changing the whole world to his liking, but would negatively impact others.
