- After being hooked up to the sleep lab equipment, Slappy had new powers. He could invade people’s dreams. He
- could appear in their sleep and terrify them—and make them do dangerous things.
- My idea was simple.
- Mom would hook me up, too. Hook Slappy and me up to the same machine. I would go to sleep. And I would invade Slappy’s dreams.
- The only way to defeat Slappy for good was to face him and defeat him in his dreams.
- Maybe I was totally wrong. Maybe my idea was ridiculous. But I couldn’t think of anything else. And … it was at least worth a try.
- ...
- That’s how Slappy and I came to be covered in electrodes and wired into a computer together. That’s how we came to be lying side by side on our backs.
- How did I get Slappy back to the sleep lab? I told him that getting hooked up again would give him even stronger powers.
- Now here we were. I shut my eyes tight and tried to force all thoughts from my mind. Clear my head and sink into the darkness … the deep darkness of sleep.
- Darkness … A deep well of solid black …
- And then a flash of bright white light made me gasp.
- And Slappy stood before me, bobbing slightly on his flimsy legs, grinning at me.
- I knew where I was. I was in Slappy’s dream. My plan had worked.
- “The nightmare is over, Slappy,” I said. “I won’t be seeing you in my sleep anymore. No one will.”
- He tossed back his head and cackled. “How are you going to stop me, Richard?” he rasped.
- “Like this,” I said. I grabbed his jacket, slid my fingers into the pocket —and pulled out the folded-up sheet of paper.
- “Hey—” he protested. He swiped at the page with one hand. Missed.
- And I read the strange words out loud: “Karru Marri Odonna Loma Molonu Karrano.”
- Slappy’s mouth opened in a long, shrill scream.
- And then the light began to dim. The dream faded. Slappy faded from sight. The blackness returned.
- Did it work? Did I end Slappy’s powers to invade dreams?
- I tried to force myself awake. But I was in a deep sleep … a long, deep sleep.
- When I finally blinked myself awake, I felt confused.
- Where am I? Not in the lab? Am I back home?
- Yes. I gazed around the room. My bedroom. I was home. Sitting up on my bed.
- I must have stayed asleep while Mom drove me home, I told myself.
- I bumped my hands together. To my surprise, they made a clonk sound.
- I gazed at my hands. I clapped them together.
- Wood!
- My hands were made of wood.
- “Huh?” I gasped and slapped my forehead. My forehead was hard.
- Wood!
- “What is up with this?” I cried. My voice. I shouted in my voice as my wooden lips clicked up and down.
- And then I saw myself in the dresser mirror against the wall.
- “No. Oh noooo.” I was Slappy. I was me, only I was inside the dummy.
- And then Richard strolled to the bed and gazed down at me. “Hey, Dummy,” he said—in Slappy’s voice.
- Slappy inside my body!
- He tossed back his head and laughed his cold laugh to the ceiling.
- “No!” I cried. “No!”
- I banged my wooden hands on the bed.
- Richard grinned at me. “Seems to have been a mix-up at the sleep lab,” he rasped.
- “No! Please—no!” I screamed.
- Richard turned and started to leave the room. At the door, he turned back and called, in Slappy’s voice, “Pleasant dreams, Dummy!”
