  1. Queen Mary was already sitting on the other end of the table as Queen Anastasia's diplomat shuffled in with her advisors and bodyguard. The little ambassador looked tense and ruffled, obviously angry that her sleep was interrupted by the surprise diplomatic meeting.
  2.
  3. "Ambassador Rockwell, so good to see you," Mary said, motioning to an empty chair on the other side of the table, "please, sit."
  4.
  5. The ambassador looked at the chair that Mary pointed to and frowned. Usually great care was taken by both sides of dwarf-amazon alliances to make sure everything in the room accommodated the disparity in height. Nevertheless, like a true diplomat the ambassador climbed up onto her seat and smiled respectfully at the queen. Her aides stood behind her along with her bodyguard, but comically they couldn't see above the table, so they were content to look at the legs of the people on the other side of the room. One of the bodyguards caught a glimpse up the queen's skirt, and smiled to himself, but quickly snapped back to professionalism, or rather the maximum level of decorum one could uphold while standing in the shadow of a table that is decently sized for the party across from you.
  6.
  7. Meanwhile, the diplomat and the queen were sharing productive moments of silence. Queen Mary sat, smiling, staring into Elizabeth Rockwell's eyes. Elizabeth's vision was partially obscured by the edge of the table as she sat in the chair offered to her, but she thought it would be rude if she stood on the chair to get a better view of Queen Mary.
  8.
  9. "I'm assuming you don't know the news, otherwise you would probably be extending condolences and congratulations simultaneously to me, along with promising some more tribute, no?" Queen Mary began.
  10.
  11. Elizabeth was confused, but being a diplomat, even though she was rather new, she kept her cool, "I was not aware of any such news," she began.
  12.
  13. Queen Mary interrupted her, "Well, my distant cousin, King Sebastian the fourth, has died without an heir, leaving me to inherit his kingdom. Of course, if you know anything about Amazonian politics, this means that I am the sole ruler of the largest Amazonian country in recorded history, and further unification is inevitable due to the fact that the new kingdom is more powerful than all the other minor states combined."
  14.
  15. Elizabeth was flustered and slightly annoyed, "well... congratulations, I will surely tell Queen Anastasia the news, she'll certainly be overjoyed that her kingdom's ancient ally has become powerful, especially through peace!"
  16.
  17. Queen Mary laughed, "Well I'm glad she'll be happy, but simple news reporting isn't the real reason I called you here at such an obscure hour. What I really wanted to discuss was the reevaluation of our alliance."
  18.
  19. Elizabeth squirmed in her chair. Queen Mary half expected her to ask a simple inane question, but since nothing was said she continued.
  20.
  21. "See, I've had this ultimatum in mind in bringing our two countries together, you might call it in more humane terms as the final stage of our alliance, the culmination of hundreds of years of decency between our societies! And so in my country's newfound position of strength, I now have the chance to extend this redefining of the terms of our alliance to your country," Queen Mary placed a small envelope on the opposite edge of the table from her, "I can trust that this letter will reach Queen Anna's eyes in the next few hours, correct?"
  22.
  23. Elizabeth snapped to her senses, "Why, yes!" she grabbed the envelope, "I'll deliver it to her personally, in the royal jet!"
  24.
  25. She was just about to jump off the chair in a controlled yet desperate attempt to escape when Queen Mary spoke again, "That won't be necessary, ambassador. I can assure you your personal delivery is not required."
  26.
  27. Elizabeth stopped in her tracks, and then, defeated, handed the letter to one of her aides. Her aide took it and then quickly shuffled out the door, a single bodyguard going with him, scrambling to leave.
  28.
  29. Queen Mary stood, smiling down at the ambassador as she sat dangling, "as for you," she began, slowly walking around the table, "I'd like to request you and the rest of your staff to accompany me and my court in my trip to receive my cousin's crown."
  30.
  31. The ambassador was flabbergasted, "your good majesty, I must refuse, my staff and I are not equipped to go on such an important diplomatic-" Elizabeth was cut off as Queen Mary simply lifted a hand and snapped her fingers.
  32.
  33. The queen let the silence hang for a while before she began to speak again, "Elizabeth my dear, you and a small diplomatic party will accompany me and join in the festivities of my coronation." I simply insist it. Ambassador Elizabeth opened her mouth to respond and Mary silenced her with a raised finger.
  34.
  35. "My kingdom will spare no expense so that you and your party will be properly accommodated." Mary said, and then her and her staff promptly left the room.
  36.
  37. There was no more sleep that night in the dwarf country's embassy. "Thank you," Mary said as her intern and personal assistant, the mousy-haired Sarah, poured her another cup of coffee. Mary was staring at the phone. Eventually, it rang and the ambassador rushed to grab it and put it to her ear.
  38.
  39. "Ambassador Mary, what could be troubling us in this unholy hour?" Mary was briefly and profoundly comforted by the sound of her Queen's voice. Eventually though, the ambassador had to speak.
  40.
  41. "Your Majesty, my queen, the unthinkable has happened. The balance of power in the Amazonian kingdoms has been irreparably damaged. Queen Mary looks to unite the Amazons."
  42.
  43. The line was silent for a while. "I knew this day would come, but I didn't realize so soon."
  44.
  45. "Harry is bringing you a letter from the queen," Elizabeth continued, "I couldn't deliver it personally, Mary wants me and some of my embassy with her when she takes the crown."
  46.
  47. Again there was silence on the line, this time longer. Eventually the queen spoke, "There is little in the way of orders I can give to you. I'm sending you a plane, put as much of the embassy staff on it as possible, then," the queen's voice began to break, "take a small diplomatic mission and dutifully fulfill the good queen Mary's wishes."
  48.
  49. Elizabeth could muster nothing more than a quiet, "yes, your majesty," before she gently hung up the phone.
  50.
  51. As the ambassador stared down into her coffee, Sarah piped up.
  52.
  53. "Ambassador, are we going to be okay?"
  54.
  55. Elizabeth couldn't muster an answer.
  56.
  57.
  58. --------
  59.
  60. The next day the ambassador and a skeleton crew bid farewell to the rest of the staff of the embassy. There were tears as they hopped on the plane to go back to the homecountry, and after they left the embassy fell into an eerie silence. Only Sarah, Elizabeth, Melanie, the junior ambassador, and Oliver, a foreign officer, were still in the building. They worked in idleness, their luggage right next to them, ready to go at a moment's notice. Eventually there was a ring on the embassy gate, and Elizabeth pressed the button to answer it.
  61.
  62. "Hello?" she asked.
  63.
  64. "Hello ambassador, my name is Judith, I'm one of the queen's courtiers. I've been sent to fetch your party in preparation for our journey."
  65.
  66. "Yes," Elizabeth said hesitantly, "we'll be right out."
  67.
  68. And with that, the four dwarves left the embassy out to the waiting car. Judith was waiting at the back door of the car to let them in. She was a young looking amazon, rather plain but still beautiful, with long, straight hair. Each person was helped in one by one into a carseat waiting for them in the back. Humiliatingly, Judith snapped up the five point harness for each one. Sarah was simply scared by the seat, Elizabeth and Melanie at least tried to act dignified as Judith buckled them in, but Oliver resisted, slapping her hands away.
  69.
  70. "Please sir, this is for your own safety!" Judith said, and eventually she overpowered him anyway. Then she took her spot in the front seat and signaled to the driver to go ahead.
  71.
  72. "I hope you understand the rush, we're going straight to the royal train station. The queen wishes to get this journey underway."
  73.
  74. The car stopped at the train station and Judith led the four towards the boarding platform. Their luggage of course was gone, still in the back of the car. The driver made a token effort to look like he was getting it out, but Elizabeth was almost certain that he just left it in the trunk and drove off. Judith and the four boarded the car.
  75.
  76. "Ambassador, the queen requests your presence in her car. The rest of your party can follow me, the queen's car is just in front of us."
  77.
  78. Elizabeth turned to the front of the train, looking at the incredibly ornate door that stood in front of her, in between her and the queen. Taking a deep breath, she walked stoically forward and gave the door a few sharp raps. One of queen Mary's handmaids opened the door and then ushered Elizabeth in.
  79.
  80. "I called the queen on the telephone last night, and she would like for me to convey her warmest congratulations." Elizabeth said.
  81.
  82. Elizabeth wasn't even looking into the room, but as her gaze raised to take in the whole car, she could see that the queen wasn't even there. The whole car was an incredibly ornate royal apartment. A both was against one wall for taking meals, just like a dining car. There was a grand bedchamber walled off from the rest of the car, along with incredibly wardrobes and dressers near the back where she was standing.
  83.
  84. "Ah, Elizabeth, it's good to see you've made it. I hope Judith treated you to a safe journey." Mary said, stepping out of her bedchamber.
  85.
  86. "She did, your majesty," Elizabeth replied.
  87.
  88. "Ah!" Mary tutted, "see, I don't think I fancy being called "your majesty" anymore."
  89.
  90. "Is that so, your highness?" Elizabeth responded.
  91.
  92. "Yes, I think that my assumption to this throne and the new future it brings for my kingdom requires a new title, no? From now on, I will be Queen Mary, Mother of All Nations! Or," she winked, "just mother for short."
  93.
  94. "Yes, mother," Elizabeth responded, sweating.
  95.
  96. "See," Mary continued, pacing towards Elizabeth, "this title came to me when I was trying to sleep last night. I was enraptured in thought, about, what should the nature of my new reign be? After much deliberation I decided that as queen, I was a mother to my people and to my kingdom."
  97.
  98. "That is very well put, mother," Elizabeth responded.
  99.
  100. "Isn't it? A mother protects and nourishes her children, it is a bond of unconditional love and caring, no?"
  101.
  102. "It is, mother," Elizabeth responded.
  103.
  104. "After this, I realized my own potential. I should not only be a mother to my own people, but a mother to all people. A mother's duty is also to bring wayward children back under the folds, is it not?"
  105.
  106. Elizabeth didn't respond.
  107.
  108. At this point, Mary was right on top of the ambassador, so much so that Mary bent down and slid her hands under Elizabeth's armpits and lifted her up into the air.
  109.
  110. "The truth is, when I truly assume the title of mother of all nations, your kind will be mother's youngest children. And the youngest child is the most special."
  111.
  112. Elizabeth felt Mary's body slowly rock.
  113.
  114. "You littles are immature, undeveloped and helpless. If you were not incompetent in war also, your kind would have surely gone extinct even closer to the cradle! It is a tragedy that your people have gone astray. But, it is our fault. Us amazons have been caught up in our own affairs, we have been negligent towards our natural children. With me? No more."
  115.
  116. Mary began to walk to the next car, muttering more and more things in the ambassador's ear about the nature of her reign. The ambassador herself sat there, dumbfounded. She was helpless. All of the dignity she had been meticulously building among Amazons for years, all of the diplomatic rapport to ensure mutual respect between the two sides had gone up in smoke in a simple gesture, that being a mother picking up her child.
  117.
  118. "This, this is where you belong," Mary said, moving from one car to another further away from her bedchamber. Elizabeth was instantly floored by what she saw.
  119.
  120. The car was essentially a nursery car. Four cribs, a play area and various other sundry elements of a nursery. Elizabeth spotted Sarah. She was completely pale, sitting in the center of a play mat. Her eyes looked red, like she had been crying, but now she just looked numb. Melanie was trying to keep it together next to her, but her dignity looked shattered. Oliver could be heard shouting somewhere. Other than that, there were four other women in the car, each one wearing the uniform of a dignified, royal nanny. Speaking of uniforms, it was easily apparent that each one of Elizabeth's comrades were swaddled in thick disposable diapers under their clothes.
  121.
  122. "Ah, you've brought another little one for us, my queen? Very good." One of the nannies said. Before Mary could hand the ambassador off though, she jumped from her arms, turning to face the two amazons.
  123.
  124. Queen Mary just laughed, "Oh, so the little girl has finally decided to make her big stand, hmm? See, that's what I love about your kind, a rebellion in one of the provinces requires a regiment of nannies, instead of gunfire all you'll hear is spankings! Is this really what you want to do, dear? The outcome will be the same. Come quietly, and your nanny won't spank you."
  125.
  126. Elizabeth faltered, the nanny smiled and grabbed her, picking her up. The nanny quickly got her on to a changing table. Elizabeth was trying to keep the veneer of dignity alive, an in that way some hope alive that queen Mary didn't mean what she said, but as the soft padding came up between her legs, Elizabeth began to bawl. Hot tears flew down her face as she was dressed in her incredibly short toddler dress. She could hear Sarah as well join in on her cries.
  127.
  128. After her change, Mary picked Elizabeth back up and carried her back into her chamber. Mary's bedchamber now had similar furniture to the nursery, with one of each in baby furniture.
  129.
  130. "Take a look at yourself, dear," Mary said, carrying Elizabeth to a mirror.
