Rootspring was beginning to think that he couldn’t go on putting one paw in front of another when he heard a cat calling from somewhere ahead of them. “Squirrelflight! Squirrelflight!”
“That’s Bramblestar’s voice!” Squirrelflight gasped, hope kindling in her eyes as she halted and gazed around.
The undergrowth rustled around them. But it wasn’t the ThunderClan leader who stepped into the open. Instead, four spirit cats, their eyes blank and staring, broke out of the bushes and surrounded them. All four spoke at once, still mocking their prisoners with the voice of Bramblestar.
“There you are!”
