  1. Davin swept his hair out of his eyes and kept running as the spot he had just stood erupted in a shower of molten stone. A great and terrible screech filled the increasingly cramped cavern as he ran to take shelter behind any bit of rock or debris he could find. He had to finish preparing this spell, it was the only thing he had in him that could turn the tables now.
  2. He had entered this cave no more than an hour ago with a mind to slay the horrible dragon that had made its home here. Terrified peasants had petitioned his guild to remove it after an old woman died of fright as it passed over their village, but there was strangely no report of any damage it caused of its own volition. Still, a job was a job, and Davin had passed through the cavern’s gigantic gaping mouth with staff and spellbook and overflowing confidence in hand. What he did not predict was the increasingly narrow interior he discovered the deeper he went.
  3. It turned out, much to his dismay, that the great beast had no trouble slithering like a worm through tight spaces. Now he found himself sprinting away from a massive, screaming, fire-vomiting dragon through tunnels that forced him to stoop to avoid hitting his head. Suddenly, he struck a dead end. Cursing under his breath, he whirled to face a glowing red tidal wave of teeth and fire, and defiantly held up his staff. The spell was ready.
  4. “Anna minulle voimaa, että lohikäärmettä voisin muuttaa osaksi olento ylittämättömän herttaisuus.” The words flowed from him, and the tunnel was filled with smoke and a great flash of light. Davin was momentarily blinded, and the tunnel again was plunged into darkness as the light faded. Shaking his head to clear his vision, he illuminated the tip of his shaft and peered into the smoke, where he heard the most indignant thrashing about that he ever heard in his life.
  5. A small girl lay on the floor on her stomach, wiggling back and forth and gnashing her teeth, viciously growling as she swam through the dirt with her eyes closed, unaware of what had just happened to her. Davin surpressed a grin and drew a long dagger from his belt, mentally patting himself on the back for a job well done. As he grew closer, the dragon-girl realized what had happened and bolted to her feet. Shuffling backwards and very much surprised, she pressed her back against the tunnel wall and gave Davin a massive, intimidating, and entirely terrifying: “Rooooar!”
  6. Davin, who had dipped well into his willpower reserves to contain himself, lost all composure and doubled over laughing, stomping on the ground and hugging himself. “By the Oath and Council! It’s the cutest thing that I ever saw!” With tears in her eyes, the dragon-girl ran over and pushed him, hard enough for him to topple to the ground as she ran sobbing down the tunnel, into the darkness. Davin scrambled to his feet and took off in hot pursuit, knowing full well that she would be even harder to find in these tunnels in her current state…
