ㅡ background: nayoung found out that they weren't her real parents when she was the age of twelve. they had been newlyweds, only a year or two into their marriage, when her mother's friend had showed up at their doorstep, begging them to take her daughter. her adoptive parents sat her down and she listened as they told the story of how her biological father never wanted any daughters; how her mother had told her father it was a son she carried in her stomach, and how her father threatened to kill not only her, but her mother as well, when he discovered that he was going to have a daughter instead of a son. it was then that she realized that love was a fickle thing, since all she heard about her parents before that point was that they were an extremely happy couple, especially on the weeks leading up to the big question. her brother was only ten, and hadn't understood how serious the situation was, and was confused when his sister suddenly began to build walls around herself-- close herself off to him (in the course of a year, she was back to her old self around him, but there was always a sort of cautiousness, he noticed) as if he was the son her original parents wanted. nayoung spilled all her secrets and emotions into a notebook she secretly kept under the clothes in her drawer.
               during her school years post-discovery, nayoung had rejected any and all confessions that were sent her way, making her infamous at her school for being a heartbreaker. though the ones closest to her knew she wasn't as bitchy as the rejected boys made her seem to be, the rest of the school's population was easily swayed and believed the heartbroken and extremely exaggerated stories the boys told. it didn't exactly faze nayoung at that point, keeping her head high as she knew that this is exactly why she didn't believe in love in the first place. the only time she had ever accepted a boy was when he kept pursuing her, admiring his dedication, which had definitely made him happy. his name was jackson and he was, in all honesty, the epitome of a perfect boyfriend. he was absolutely smitten with her, not caring and only understanding when she would have her off days and separate herself from him as if he was some sort of disease; he was kind, and dedicated to her and only her. her first instinct was to run. as soon as she found herself melting into his touches and smiling at the thought of him even though he wasn't present, nayoung immediately ended the relationship and went back to being single-- but that didn't stop him from continuing with taking care of her, even from afar.
