196. Headcanons:
1. Kozmotis called his daughter a number of tender nicknames, including, “Babygirl,” “Chickadee,” and “Bud” (in honor of the flowers she enjoyed making for herself and, to his loving dismay, putting in his hair).

 197.
2. Before he became Pitch Black, Kozmotis was a handsome man with serene, stoic, aquiline features, tall and lean and muscular. His body type was LONG, attenuated, stretched looking, even despite his musculature. He stood at 6 feet, 4 inches tall. His hair was naturally black, dark brown in bright light, and combed back. He had a few prematurely gray hairs. His eyes were large and gold.

 198.
3. Kozmotis had extensive martial training in the longsword, the bow and arrow, and the scythe. The scythe was his weapon of preference. His wife Estelle taught him to improve his aim at the bow and arrow. His daughter Seraphina in turn learned the bow and arrow from him.

 199.
4. Before being relegated to watch over the Fearlings on the Prison Planet, when not in battle, Kozmotis led a quiet life. In a desperate effort to fit into a civilian world, which did not particularly suit him, Kozmotis was a very serious, yet very unassuming, personality. He was proper and deeply shy, both of which came across as a kind of falsely stern hauteur. An excellent comparison to Pitch’s pre-corrupted personality is Alan Rickman’s portrayal of Colonel Brandon, in Ang Lee’s film of Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. Kozmotis was also quietly stern and pragmatic and held a lot of similarities to the character of “Ronin” from the film Epic 2013. Kozmotis rarely joked or smiled and he was rather socially awkward, but he was always gentle and infinitely patient with children, and far more affectionate than his shyness and war record would outwardly suggest. He let children who were Seraphina’s friends crawl all over, tease, and play with him, and he was a wonderful playmate, shedding typical inhibitions to play horsie, and peekaboo, tea party, hide and go seek, and even a game or two of dress-up. Local children adored him and local parents joked that if he weren’t a brilliant soldier, he would make the perfect babysitter. In these ways Kozomotis was obviously excellent “Guardian material.” The last thing children could ever be toward him was afraid. Irony.

 200.
5. Kozmotis had a hidden acerbic wit that came out when he was absolutely impatient with other adults, particularly if they were being frivolous or unkind to others. A few taciturn words from the general and the recipient felt thoroughly cut down to size. Safeguarding weaker beings was a part of his nature and he had no tolerance for wolves in sheep’s clothing.

 201.
6. When cornered into small talk, at which he was horrendously bad, Kozmotis had a terrible habit of prattling aimlessly, which only further embarrassed him. This was when he would start to nervously laugh. Kozmotis’s laugh was soft, dopey, and high pitched. He was self conscious about the sound of it, which was the main reason why he rarely let it be heard. Interestingly enough, when he becomes the Bogeyman Pitch Black, his laugh is deep and charismatic and his capacity to be glibly loquacious and sassy is unmatched.

 202.
7. Kozmotis was hopelessly awkward with women and Seraphina’s feisty mother was the only woman with whom he ever had a serious relationship. Seraphina’s mother is as of February 2013 ThatLadyNocturne, an OC wife of Kozmotis. Her character’s name is “Estelle” and after she dies, she is reincarnated as a spirit of the night, a patron of bandits, travelers, and nocturnal creatures, whose primary disguised form is as a barn owl. Her memories, like Pitch’s, are muddled and their reunion as a married couple is extremely gradual.

 203.
Part of the reason for Kozmotis’s extremely protective streak toward his daughter is that she is all that is left of his wife, and despite all his best efforts, he feels that he failed to protect Estelle.

 204.
8. Kozmotis adored his daughter Seraphina with all his heart and soul. He made it his singular life mission to keep her safe and happy—to the extent that he sometimes went too far in sheltering her from the horrifying realities of the world. He was chronically hard on himself. What he did not realize was that he was by all standards a model father: caring, consistent, attentive, and affectionate. While called away on his galleon almost continuously to battle during the War of the Constellations, he would send trinkets from every planetary port and outpost to Seraphina alongside detailed letters which invariably painted his time away from home as a much safer and happier endeavor than it was. Seraphina lined both her own room and her father’s with the gifts he sent, and returned his letters faithfully. Their bond remained unusually strong—almost to the extent of an empathic connection, wherein they could often sense each other’s happiness and distress literally across planets and galaxies—despite the fact that they spent the majority of her life apart.

 205.
Kozmotis’s greatest fear was that harm would befall Seraphina. The Fearlings saw into his soul and capitalized on this.

 206.
9. Kozmotis began his military career as a royal guard on one of the remoter planets in his solar system, while attending a local university and studying litigation. He displayed exceptional dutifulness and efficiency, and was promoted to the role of personal bodyguard to several children of several nobles. When he excelled at this career, which was his favorite step in his upward-path to fame, the Constellations promoted him through the ranks of their armed forces. He was made a general at an unprecedented young age, in his early thirties.

 207.
This was not a career turn that he particularly enjoyed. It was the gratification of protecting weaker and more vulnerable beings, not the gratification of killing, that had made him so fond of being a royal guard. Kozmotis hated killing; he did it with a grim resolve, though his ruthless efficiency made him very good at dispatching Fearlings and Nightmare Men. Because DUTY above all else guided Kozmotis’s life choices, he accepted the promotion without complaint and continued to do his job protecting the planets.

 208.
Kozmotis became literally legendary for his military exploits. He single-handedly won the turning point battles of the War of the Constellations. He found increasingly that, on leaves of absences, he was bombarded with praise and accolades by civilians. This only deeply embarrassed him, but he took it like a trooper: the way he took everything.

 209.
Kozmotis’s natural almost neurotic need to protect others was augmented with the death of his wife, for which he always unfairly blamed himself. This, and the very existence of his beloved daughter Seraphina, prompted him to accept the post of centurion at the Prison Planet for the Fearlings: even though he knew it meant he would remain separated from his daughter for an indefinite and possibly permanent time.

 210.
10. The Pitchiner family was a long line of diplomats, soldiers, and statesmen of the lower nobility. They came from vast sums of old money but were not of royal blood. Kozmotis’s name was a family name and he was the fourth of his name. His father was a politician who married a young duchess. Kozmotis’s father was firm and exacting but also instilled high virtue in his son. It was from his father that Kozmotis learned it was unacceptable to air one’s dirty laundry before others; to repress negative emotion and to endure hardship. From his mother he learned philanthropy, though she too was emotionally reserved toward her son. A steely but physically frail woman, she mandated that the best tutors be hired to educate her heir. These tutors were rigid and almost pathologically cruel, forcing the child Kozmotis to master his lessons to perfection before he could eat or relieve himself. It was during this time that Kozmotis began his habit of hiding under beds and in closets, to escape the restrictions imposed by his elders. His parents did not mean for any form of cruelty to befall him; their conduct conformed to cultural customs.

 211.
11. Kozmotis’s parents died in a freak shipwreck just off of port of their town. He witnessed their deaths. He was shipped off from one maternal relative to the next in an (unsuccessful) attempt to keep him out from under the thumb of the patron nobles who had so long controlled his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. This family was the Lunanoff Family.

 212.
12. Hailed as the wisest and most magnanimous rulers among the Constellations, the Lunanoffs were actually in large part a collection of clever Machiavellians who believed in doing small evils to uphold greater goods. The Pitchiners were often disparagingly whispered to be the “trained dogs” of the Lunanoffs, a fact not far from the truth; the family was very loyal to the Lunanoff Tsars and Tsarinas. Perhaps the greatest bitter irony of Kozmotis’s life began when the current Tsar elected to become his lifelong patron, overseeing his educational and military career. And when the time came for war against the Fearlings, it was that Tsar’s son who, at a meeting of the Constellations Council, appointed Kozmotis General of the Constellation Armies. Though Kozmotis’s acts of valor had certainly earned him the position, it was also a machination on the part of the Lunanoffs: They knew nobody else would be virtuous enough to withstand the maddening and corruptive force of the Fearlings. They also knew that, ultimately, Kozmotis would fall prey to this force. They were willing to sacrifice one good man for the greater safety of the somewhat misleadingly titled “Golden Age.”

 213.
13. This is precisely the reason why Kozmotis—a widowed father—was stationed at the door of the Prison Planet in the far corner of the universe. The Lunanoffs knew that their sacrificial lamb would one day open that door and absorb the Fearlings. But they genuinely believed that Kozmotis, a man of virtue, would be able to withstand and somehow contain the Fearlings. In fact, they were partially correct: Though Kozmotis became Pitch the Nightmare King, he was also the LIVING PRISON PLANET, the VESSEL, of Fear, which contained it and did far more damage control than a less honorable man might have. Unfortunately, Kozmotis’s fall orphaned his daughter and still led to the massive destruction of planets and whole galaxies at Pitch’s hand. And many eons later, Pitch would become the arch enemy of Tsar Lunar, the descendant of the same Tsar who exiled him to the Prison Planet. Some of Pitch’s rage at “the child who had never had a nightmare” was (and is) latent anger at the descendant of the person who robbed his daughter of a happy childhood.

 214.
14. Kozmotis realized that he had been tricked both by the Lunanoffs and by the Fearlings the moment he opened the Prison Planet door. But he also realized in that moment that he could not eternally keep the Fearlings at bay. One day, though looking at Seraphina’s locket strengthened him, he would give in to madness, and they would flood out. Kozmotis realized fear could not be killed individually, but it COULD be CONTAINED from WITHIN. So, after a “valiant” initial struggle, Kozmotis voluntarily went into the prison cell of the Fearlings to be absorbed by them. He realized it was his only chance to ultimately keep his daughter safe from the monsters that he had guarded. Kozmotis did NOT open the door in a moment of weakness. He did NOT open the door in a moment of temptation. He was TRICKED into thinking his daughter was inside and afraid, and then when he opened the door and realized he had been deceived, he VOLUNTARILY SACRIFICED himself.

 215.
”Yes. They left me alone at my post, with time only to relieve myself and maybe sleep an hour here or there, on a Prison Planet, in the darkest farthest corner of the known universe—it took months for even the speediest clipper to even get there one way—and the rationale behind that, I couldn’t fathom at the time. I thought possibly they just…they just had that much faith in my abilities, and I was always the kind of man who had a terrible time saying ‘no’ when those in need summoned me. As the eons have passed…well, I forgot that i ever served the Lunanoffs and Constellation Collective. But I always despised the family whose ship became Earth’s moon the most. And after regaining my memories…I’ve pieced together what was staring me at the face at the time that a General was demoted to a Prison Guard. They always intended me to be absorbed, eventually. They hand-picked the man they thought righteous enough to withstand the moral turmoil of having all the Fear in the universe constantly whisper scary, lonely, painful, sad, angry things in his ear all day, every day. Huh. Heh, you know, for them it was a win-win. Either I actually managed to stand at a prison and keep the cosmos orderly for the rest of time…..or I was going to let open that door and be devoured. But oh, stalwart Kozmotis….he can do it….he can bear that burden, and just become a prison that lives and breathes. He’s the best man for the job of being the host of demons.” A bitter laugh. “They always knew I’d become this…thing..that I am. I’m dancing to Tsar Lunar’s tune alright, the tune he inherited from his ancestors. I’m ‘fortune’s fool,’ as the Bard puts it.”

 216.
15. Kozmotis purchased the silver locket in which he placed Seraphina’s picture during the War of the Constellations. The first picture to be placed in it was his own clumsy charcoal hand drawing of her. Later, during a visit home, he had a photograph taken of her around the age of nine, and he placed that inside the locket.

 217.
He looked at that locket hundreds and hundreds of times. It was his one link back to happiness, it reminded him of why he sacrificed so much and fought so hard, and it was his solace. It is genuinely infused with the oldest, strongest, and most powerful force in the universe: a parent’s selfless love for a child. Even now, it has the power to fully revert Pitch Black to his human self, if he will only let it.
