- Character Name: Endive
- Endive hardly resented the saiyan aristocracy for the tasks they’d assigned him, but his torso’s scarring remained a constant reminder of all that he’d suffered on their behalf.
- They’d separated Endive from his family when he was still an infant, his anomalous power too valuable an asset to be wasted on the planet’s masses. The elites decorated him in gold and jewels and regaled him with stories of how he’d been chosen to act as an agent of the ruling elites. They poisoned his mind with tales of how he’d serve as their champion and stand as a hero to all the saiyan people, but he was offered no other life.
- Contrary to their promises of greatness, the elites treated their living weapon harshly and began his training at a young age. Endive’s trials were long and arduous and brought him great familiarity with the battlefield in even his earliest moments deployed.
- His initial outings proved fruitful. His handlers saw rapid improvement and adaptation by the youth as he dealt with hazardous wildlife and enemies of the state. By all metrics, Endive excelled as an ideal saiyan specimen.
- Then came the fits.
- The source of Endive’s power proved ineffable to the saiyans’ greatest minds, and rapid fluctuations in its highs and lows made study difficult. At times, Endive’s power seemed more in-line with the power of the world’s middling fighters, but when pushed to his limits, the young saiyan power would rocket to unprecedented heights that made clear his value to his masters.
- ---
- It was when Endive was sent to patrol the open wastelands that they made their move.
- The four saiyan adults quickly encircled the younger, each taking a direction. They were dissidents and revolutionaries who had turned rebel in their speaking out against the ruling elite. They recognized the youth as the lapdog of the planet’s rulers and among the most pressing threats that stood between themselves and the king and queen.
- Their leader, who stood front and center of Endive, was Rutaba, a low class who’d managed to garner the support of his peers through his preaching of a classless Sadala.
- “So, royal dog,” Rutaba said, “it looks like we’ve finally got you cornered.”
- “You can… Leave…” Endive’s words came slowly and with a yawn. The young saiyan rarely spoke. He rolled his shoulders, an audible popping in the process.
- Rutaba furrowed his brow and began to recite a piece on how Endive was a traitor to the true saiyan people and his penance was nigh. Endive stared onwards, finding it difficult to focus on his opponent’s words. Already, the saiyan could feel a familiar murkiness circling at the corners of his mind.
- “...Are you even listening?” Rutaba finished as Endive’s senses returned to him. “It doesn’t matter if you did. The time has come.”
- The weakest of the four enemy saiyans, a low-class warrior Endive was unfamiliar with, was the first to make his move. He drew in from behind, rocketing himself forward with a strike meant to connect with the young saiyan’s head.
- As if entirely on primal impulse, Endive leaned himself from the path of the strike, delivering his own debilitating blow to the stomach of the low-class aggressor and forcing him away. The motion took little from the youth, but, still, his breathing had grown heavier. The fogginess began to choke at his mind. The murkiness had begun to appear more frequently.
- Rutaba quickly created space between himself and the youth, a smirk drawing on his face as his remaining two underlings moved to each release a barrage of ki blasts from opposite directions. Endive outstretched his arms, projecting a ki barrier around himself.
- “You’re done for, royal dog. Did you think we’d come unprepared. I’ve been measuring your power and I hate to tell you that you stand near the median of our little grouping here.”
- Endive continued to weather the storm, attempting to let the opponents exhaust their energy reserves. His legs buckled as his own energy emptied beneath the enemies’ volley.
- The blasts overtook the young saiyan, clouding the area with soil kicked up into the air. Rutaba motioned for his men to halt as they returned to their leader’s side.
- ---
- And then Endive was there again, the dark place he was always sent when his mind fogged. He’d often wondered whether this was some space within his own mind or if it was some distant land whose denizen had traded its place with himself.
- He drifted through the emptiness as he always did, unthinking, unfeeling. The space was an endless and suffocating stasis which asked nothing of the young saiyan.
- ---
- And as quick as the moment had come, the saiyan was released from the dark’s swell.
- “M-MONSTER! You were supposed to be nothing! Your power was nothing!” Rutaba cried out as the suddenly lucid Endive continued to hold the low class by his collar. The earth had been split and scarred by an apparent blast. Endive could feel that his muscle mass had increased grotesquely, the last of the burgeoning ki granted by his wrath still swimming through his body and seeking its release.
- “I… I SURPASSED ALL OTHER SAIYANS, I WAS MEANT TO DEFEAT THE KING! YOU WERE AN ANT!” The low class cried out. “Have mercy on me…”
- Endive dropped Rutaba to the ground, weakly raising his leg overtop the low class who watched, trembling. He’d offered him a chance to go. That time had passed, and based on the battle damage, a recovery squad would arrive to return Endive to the palace before too long.
- There was no opportunity for further pleas as he brought his foot down upon Rutaba’s torso. There was a snap, and then Endive’s foe ceased to be.
