  1. The Webchesterian football league system is a series of interconnected leagues for men's association football clubs in Webchester. The system has a hierarchical format with promotion and relegation between leagues at different levels, allowing even the smallest club the theoretical possibility of ultimately rising to the very top of the system. There are more than 140 individual leagues, containing more than 480 divisions.
  2.
  3. The exact number of clubs varies from year to year as clubs join and leave leagues, fold or merge altogether, but an estimated average of 15 clubs per division implies that more than 7,000 teams of nearly 5,300 clubs are members of a league in the Webchesterian men's football league system. As there are no official definitions of any level below 11, any references to the structure at level 12 and below should not be regarded as definitive.
  4.
  5. The pyramid for women's football in Webchester runs separately to nine tiers.

  8. Webchester Premier League (known for sponsorship reasons as the FNB Premier League) is the top level of the Webchesterian football league system. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Webchester Football League (WFL). Seasons run from August to May with each team playing 38 matches (playing all 19 other teams both home and away). Most games are played on Saturdays and Sundays, with a few games played during weekday evenings. Play is regularly suspended the last weekend before Christmas for two weeks before returning in the second week of January.
  9.
  10. Webchester Premier League is the most-watched sports league in the virtual world, broadcast in 212 territories to 643 million homes and a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people.
  11.
  12. There are 20 clubs in the Premier League. During the course of a season (from August to May) each club plays the others twice (a double round-robin system), once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents', for 38 games. Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. No points are awarded for a loss. Teams are ranked by total points, then goal difference, and then goals scored. If still equal, teams are deemed to occupy the same position. If there is a tie for the championship, for relegation, or for qualification to other competitions, a play-off match at a neutral venue decides rank.
  13.
  14. A system of promotion and relegation exists between the Premier League and the WFL Championship. The three lowest placed teams in the Premier League are relegated to the Championship, and the top two teams from the Championship promoted to the Premier League, with an additional team promoted after a series of play-offs involving the third, fourth, fifth and sixth placed clubs.
  15.
  16. The following 20 clubs are competing in the Premier League during the 2019–20 season:
  17. Webchesterfield United
  18. Webchesterfield Princes
  19. Webchesterfield Wednesday

  39. The Webchester Football League Championship is the highest division of the Webchester Football League (WFL) and second-highest overall in the Webchesterian football league system after the Premier League. The league is contested by 24 clubs. Each season, the two top-finishing teams in the Championship are automatically promoted to the Premier League. The teams that finish the season in 3rd to 6th place enter a playoff tournament, with the winner also gaining promotion to the Premier League. The three lowest-finishing teams in the Championship are relegated to League One.
  40.
  41. The Championship, which was introduced for the 2004–05 season, was previously known as the Football League First Division (1992–2004), and before that as the Football League Second Division (1892–1992). The winners of the Championship receive the WFL Championship trophy, the same trophy as the old First Division champions were handed prior to the Premier League's inception in 1992.
  42.
  43. The league comprises 24 teams. Over the course of a season, which runs annually from August to the following May, each team plays twice against the others in the league, once at 'home' and once 'away', resulting in each team competing in 46 games in total. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss. The teams are ranked in the league table by points gained, then goal difference, then goals scored and then their head-to-head record for that season. In the event that two or more teams finish the season equal in all these respects, teams are separated by alphabetical order, unless a promotion, relegation or play-off place is at stake, when the teams are separated by a play-off game, though this improbable situation has never arisen in all the years the rule has existed.
  44.
  45. At the end of the season, the top two teams and the winner of the Championship play-offs are promoted to the Premier League and the bottom three teams are relegated to Football League One. The Football League Championship play-offs is a knock-out competition for the teams finishing the season in third to sixth place with the winner being promoted to the Premier League. In the play-offs, the third-placed team plays against the sixth-placed team and the fourth-placed team plays against the fifth-placed team in two-legged semi-finals (home and away). The winners of each semi-final then compete in a single match at Wembley stadium with the prize being promotion to the Premier League and the Championship play-off trophy.
  46.

  48. The Webchester Football League One is the second-highest division of the Webchester Football League and the third tier overall in the entire Webchesterian football league system.
  49.
  50. League One was introduced for the 2004–05 season. It was previously known briefly as the Football League Second Division and for much longer, prior to the advent of the Premier League, as the Football League Third Division.
  51.
  52. There are 24 clubs in League One. Each club plays every other club twice (once at home and once away). Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss. At the end of the season a table of the final League standings is determined, based on the following criteria in this order: points obtained, goal difference, goals scored, an aggregate of the results between two or more clubs (ranked using the previous three criteria) and, finally, a series of one or more play-off matches.
  53.
  54. At the end of each season the top two clubs, together with the winner of the play-offs between the clubs which finished in 3rd–6th position, are promoted to WFL Championship and are replaced by the three clubs that finished at the bottom of that division.
  55.
  56. Similarly, the four clubs that finished at the bottom of WFL League One are relegated to WFL League Two and are replaced by the top three clubs and the club that won the 4th–7th place play-offs in that division.
  57.
  58. ===
  59. The Webchester Football League Two is the third and lowest division of the Webchester Football League (WFL) and fourth-highest division overall in the Webchesterian football league system.
  60.
  61. Football League Two was introduced for the 2004–05 season. It was previously known as the Football League Third Division. Before the advent of the Premier League in 1992, the fourth-highest division was known as the Football League Fourth Division.
  62.
  63. There are 24 clubs in League Two. Each club plays each of the other clubs twice (once at home, once away) and is awarded three points for a win, one for a draw and no points for a loss. From these points a league table is constructed.
  64.
  65. At the end of each season the top three teams, together with the winner of the play-offs between the teams which finished in the fourth to seventh positions, are promoted to WFL League One and are replaced by the four teams that finished at the bottom of that division.
  66.
  67. Similarly, the two teams that finished at the bottom of League Two are relegated to the National League and are replaced by the team that finished first and the team that won the second through seventh place play-off in that division. Technically a team can be reprieved from relegation if the team replacing them does not have a ground suitable for League football, but in practice this is a non-factor because every team currently in the National League has a ground that meets the League criteria (and even if they did not, a ground-sharing arrangement with another team could be made until their stadium was upgraded). The other way that a team can be spared relegation is if another team either resigns or is expelled from the WFL.
  68.
  69. Final league position is determined, in order, by points obtained, goal difference, goals scored, a mini-league of the results between two or more teams ranked using the previous three criteria, and finally a series of one or more play-off matches.
  70.
  71. There is a mandatory wage cap in this division that limits spending on players' wages to 100% of club turnover.

  74. WFA Cup is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic Webchesterian football. First played during the 1871–72 season, it is the oldest national football competition in the virtual world. It is organised by and named after Webchester Football Association. A concurrent women's tournament is also held, the WFA Women's Cup.
  75.
  76. The competition is open to any eligible club down to Level 10 of the English football league system – all 92 professional clubs in the Premier League (Level 1) and the Webchester Football League (Levels 2 to 4), and several hundred non-League teams in Steps 1 to 6 of the National League System (Levels 5 to 10). The tournament consists of 12 randomly drawn rounds followed by the semi-finals and the final. Entrants are not seeded, although a system of byes based on league level ensures higher ranked teams enter in later rounds – the minimum number of games needed to win, depending on which round a team enters the competition, ranges from six to fourteen.
  77.
  78. The first six rounds are the Qualifying Competition, from which 32 teams progress to the first round of the Competition Proper, meeting the first of the 48 professional teams from Leagues One and Two. The last entrants are the Premier League and Championship clubs, into the draw for the Third Round Proper. Winners receive the WFA Cup trophy.
  79.
  80. Beginning in August, the competition proceeds as a knockout tournament throughout, consisting of twelve rounds, a semi-final and then a final, in May. A system of byes ensures clubs above Level 9 and 10 enter the competition at later stages. There is no seeding, the fixtures in each round being determined by a random draw. Prior to the fifth round, fixtures ending in a tie are replayed once only. The first six rounds are qualifiers, with the draws organised on a regional basis. The next six rounds are the "proper" rounds where all clubs are in one draw.
  81.
  82. Entrants from the bottom two levels (9 and 10) begin the competition in the Extra Preliminary Round. Clubs from higher levels are then added in later rounds. The months in which rounds are played are traditional, with exact dates subject to each year's calendar.
  83.
  84. The qualifying rounds are regionalised to reduce the travel costs for smaller non-league sides. The final is normally held the Saturday after the Premier League season finishes in May.
  85.
  86. Fixtures in the 12 rounds of the competition are usually played at the home ground of one of the two teams. The semi-finals and final are played at a neutral venue – the Webchesterfield East Park Arena.
