I decided to research the Battle of Antietam and the Emancipation Proclamation. The Battle of Antietam happened on September 17, 1862, while the Emancipation Proclamation was written before but released on September 22 of the same year, 5 days later. They were significant because, while the Battle of Antietam was technically a draw, the Union claimed it as a tactical victory, as they were able to push the Confederacy back into their own land. This gave Lincoln more confidence to release the Emancipation Proclamation. I've always been interested in the details of how Lincoln freed slaves, if there were any conditions to it, and what the events surrounding it were, so this seemed like a good choice for me. Additionally, the case of General George McClellan refusing orders and being removed from command intrigues me.
