- Handout (Oxford) - With your partner, look at the sample responses from yesterday’s happiness topic. What score do you think each one should receive? Why?
- 1 - 3 - Answers the question with supporting points, good organization, no serious grammar problems. The supporting points are underdeveloped (especially for having only two of them), some grammar problems are repeated, somewhat limited vocabulary.
- 2 - 0 - This mostly copies words from the prompt.
- 3 - 4 - Three points, well organized, few mistakes. Points could be developed more (e.g. with specific examples).
- 4 - 2 - Clear answer to the question with support for the ideas. Far too little development and many language errors.
- 5 - 5 - Well developed (two reasons but they’re both developed more than usual), variety of vocabulary and grammar. Minor errors that don’t affect understanding.
- 6 - 1 - Some reasons are given. Serious language problems and almost no development of supporting ideas.

- Listen to the lecture from ETS 2 test 1.
- "Using points from the lecture, explain how the passion plant and the potato plant defend themselves from insects."
- A response could be organized like this:
- 1 Introduction: state the topic and summarize background information the professor gives.
- 2 Lead-in: state what points the spekaer makes (“The professor describes how two different plants defend themselves.”)
- 3 First point: (“First, she talks about physical features.”)
- 4 Detail/example: (“The passion plant has hairs…”)
- 5 Second point: (“Second, she describes chemical defenses.”)
- 6 Detail/example: (“Potato plants have a chemical that…”)
- (7 Conclusion - if there’s time)

- ETS 2 test 5 - Take 5 minutes with your partner to prepare a “perfect” response to this prompt.

- Record your responses to the ETS Guide questions.
- Listen to your recordings and decide which one we can hear as a class.
- Listen to your classmates’ responses. What was good about it? What could be improved?

- Homework (optional): If you want more feedback on yesterday’s writing than a score and one or two sentences, email me this weekend with a self-evaluation. What did you do well? What do you need to work on for your next writing? What did you do better or worse than your last writing?
