As a child, Sara was often mocked by others for being a tomboy. Growing up in her tiny hometown, she was the only girl interested in playing sports. In high school, she was a second fielder on the boy's baseball team, much to the chagrin of the town's more conservative elements -- not to mention the other teams who Sara was often responsible for single-handedly tromping. Sara has continued her dedication to athletics in college, playing on the woman's softball team at Denton State. Though very athlethic, Sara is still quite feminine, both in dress and demeanor.

During games, Sara often makes showy trash talk to intimidate her opponents -- but off the field, she is shy, almost to the point of being wilting. When the stakes are high, Sara is capable of great feats of bravery, displaying an almost boundless resolve to overcome obstacles. Despite this, she lacks self-confidence, and has been known to suffer bouts of crippling anxiety. Her mood can sour at the slightest provocation -- when this happens, she will more often than not simply retreat into herself, shutting everyone out. Occasionally, though, her response is more violent.

Sara was once voted most likely to marry her high school sweetheart. It is easy to see why -- ever since she was 15, Sara has only ever had eyes for Grey. Sometimes, though, it doesn't seem like Grey reciprocates. In fact, Grey's feelings toward Sara have deteriorated a great deal over the past few months. Nonetheless, Sara's love for Grey is as strong as ever. Perhaps the disaster that has recently struck in Denton is just the jolt their relationship needs. One thing is for sure, though -- no matter how Grey's love for Sara changes over time, Sara will always remain dedicated to him. And she will do anything it takes to protect him from danger.

Naomi Sterling

Naomi hails from a long line of police officers. Traditionally, it has been the male children in her family who pursue careers in law enforcement -- but Naomi, being an only child, took up the torch and kept the family tradition alive.

Naomi is a no-nonsense woman who has little patience for frivolty of any stripe. She has a practical -- almost utilitarian -- attitude toward everything she approaches, and doesn't like to be challenged. She has a keen eye for tactics and organization, always playing many moves ahead of her opponents. In dangerous situations, Naomi's colleagues commonly remark that it is as if she has a window into the minds of the criminals she is pursuing. Maybe this is more true than they realize -- Naomi was quite the delinquent as a teenager.

A lapsed Catholic, Naomi is often seen as nothing more than a godless cynic. And yet, when Naomi discovered a group of survivors flocking to the church that she used to attend as a young girl, she didn't hesitate to take on an active role in defending them. As perhaps the only remaining member of Denton's police force, Naomi has assembled a ragtag team of civilians to help her in keeping a 24/7 lookout patroling the church grounds. She also leads regular excursions into heavily-infested territory in order to bring back much-needed supplies, at great personal risk.

Though she is often curt or irritable, don't let Naomi's harsh exterior fool you. Underneath her facade is a kind heart that wants to do good for others. When push comes to shove, Naomi lives by the principle of altruism, and she is willing to go to enormous lengths to make sure the citizens of Denton remain safe in these troubled times.


Maya Robinson

Maya grew up poor. Unable to afford college, she ran away to Hollywood at age 17 to pursue a career in acting. But when her aspirations fell through, she moved back to Denton, putting her "wild" years behind her. She gave up on becoming a star and settled in as a waitress at a local cafe, where she met her future husband, Ben.

In happier times, Maya was a normal, well-adjusted homemaker. Because her own upbringing was marked by poverty, Maya worked hard to provide her only son, Alex, with the kind of childhood that she herself never got to have. To that end, she became the archetypal soccer mom, shuttling Alex around in her minivan -- from school to football games to Karate lessons to piano recitals and back again. Despite her outwardly wholesome appearance, though, Maya still sometimes pines for the spark of excitement that her life had back when she was living in Hollywood.

Like most survivors, Maya's quiet life has been turned on its head by the outbreak. Her fragile psyche has been shattered beyond repair -- and like a reflection viewed through a broken mirror, her personality has been twisted into a frightening caricature of itself. But though she is unpredictable, perhaps even unstable, Maya retains the love and loyalty of motherhood, and dotes on those she cares about.


Jun Yi

Jun's family emigrated to the states when she was only 3, after her father was offered the chance to join the US Army's special forces. Because her father's assignments were always in flux, Jun grew up as a military brat, never living in the same city for more than a few months. Jun's father was absent from her life more often than not -- and, because of the delicate nature of his missions, he wasn't at liberty to tell her what he did while he was gone.

At age 10, Jun developed an eye condition that required surgery. The proecedure was botched, leaving her blind in one eye and forcing her to wear a patch. The teasing that she suffered at the hands of her peers caused an already self-conscious Jun to withdraw even further into her shell. Throughout her adolescence, Jun was a loner, unable to make or keep any friends. Instead, she turned to the fantasy worlds of anime and video games to fill the void in her life left behind by lack of companionship.

Jun had hoped that in college, she might become a more well-rounded, sociable person. But shortly after moving to Denton to live on her own, a personal tragedy brought her already-strained relationship with her father to its boiling point. What's more, Jun found that her peers in college were just as cruel as her peers in secondary school -- and that she still didn't have the social skills she needed to make any friends. Jun's grades took a rapid nosedive and she dropped out just a few semesters after starting.

Unemployed, out of school, and falling headlong into depression, Jun began living like a hermit in her own apartment, afraid to face the outside world. If it weren't for people posting about it on her favorite imageboards, she may have remained blissfully unaware of the horrors developing just outside her bedroom window.


Elizabeth "Elly" de Laurent

Kind-hearted, trusting to the point of gullibility, endlessly generous, and deeply naive, Elly is the worst kind of person to be during the apocalypse.

Abandoned as an infant on the steps of a church, Elly spent much of her childhood in foster care. Though she was never adopted, the priest who originally found her on the night she was abandoned took a special interest in her -- and with his encouragement, when Elly was only 11, she made the decision to become a nun. Just a novitiate for the time being, Elly looks forward to the day that she can take her solemn vows and become a full-fledged sister.

While Elly has a poor grasp of the "real world," she is not without practical knowledge. Since joining the convent, she has been trained in horticulture and in administering first aid -- both of which rank as valuable assets to the dozens of survivors who now seek refuge at the church.

With many of the church elders now dead, Elly is one of a handful of people who the civilian survivors at the church look to for guidance. Whereas Naomi organizes the defense of the church, as well as daily forays into town for supplies, Elly oversees the rationing of scarce resources. The two have developed an odd relationship, each depending upon the other in their mutual goal of caring for the other survivors. Elly looks up to Naomi like an older sister, but wishes she would be a little bit more in tune with her spiritual side -- Naomi thinks Elly is an idiot.
