  1. Lately (the past 5 months-ish), I've experienced a very on-and-off feeling of what I think to be burnout not just with speedrunning, but with video games in general. What I mean by burnout is my enjoyment of games I normally enjoy a lot being meh.
  2.
  3. How did this happen? I think I've managed to chalk it down to a couple of key factors:
  4.
  5. 1. This first reason is best summarized as a tendency to compare myself to others.
  6. With fighting games as well as games like Magic the Gathering, people that get into those games, from what I see, seem to understand it and have it "click" in their mind not very long after they pick it up. This is keeping in mind that Magic the Gathering has complex rules and fighting games have jargon and different bits of tech or combos to keep track of that makes everything confusing. Such confusing/overwhelming elements have largely turned me off from these types of games.
  7.
  8. Another thing that I tend to use as a point of (frankly unhealthy) comparison is speedrunning commentary. The commentary I've seen from most people on speedruns, particularly at marathons, is way more entertaining and more in-depth than any commentary I've managed to think up in my head. This point of comparison that I tend to use is especially the case with RPG speedruns, where the standard for commentary is raised ten-fold in my mind whenever I try to think up commentary due to the fact that it's a genre that's not my forte and there tends to be a lot to explain or touch on.
  9.
  10. 2. This next reason is best summarized as basically an extension of point 1.
  11. This whole thing of letting the jargon or complex stuff turn me off from a game stems from something that happened in early 2015. I was playing CS GO with some people online, and I didn't know what I was doing given that I just didn't know the game that well. After a few games of me just doing whatever, trying to figure out the ropes in the process, I was kicked from that session, presumably because they were irritated at me sucking so much and holding them back. This left the impression on me during my impressionable teen years that if I do anything less than understand the mechanics perfectly the first time I play the game and other games like it, I shouldn't be playing them.
