43. A brilliant scientist left for dead returns to exact revenge on the people who burned him alive.
 44. Scientist Peyton Westlake is working on a project to create synthetic skin. Now the skin he has developed has a flaw--it will not remain stable for more than 99 minutes. His girlfriend, Julie, a lawyer is investigating a developer. She leaves some incriminating documents at Peyton's. One night Peyton was working when the lights in his lab went out, he then discovers that the synthetic skin has remained stable past 99 minutes, he deduces that it's because of light that the skin doesn't remain stable. And it is at that moment that a psychotic criminal, Robert Durant appears demanding the documents that Julie left there. They beat up Peyton, and after finding the documents they blow up Peyton's lab. Peyton was blown away and everybody believes he is dead but in reality, he was found, burned seriously and a new procedure was performed on him that renders him unable to sense pain, he also now has tremendous strength and is now prone to violent outbursts. He is now working on perfecting the synthetic skin and at the same using his technology to make synthetic skin masks of the men who attacked him so that he could strike back at them.
 45. The visual style of Darkman is extremely good - helped along by excellent direction from Evil Dead bloke Sam Raimi. At certain points the city landscape reminds you of Gotham from the Batman films.

The idea of being able to change your face to look like somebody elses, only for 99 minutes, is a great idea. The bit where Larry Drake's character comes face to face with himself at the revolving doors is execellent.

Looking back on this film from nearly a decade ago it still surprises me that Liam Neeson is in the lead role. He has rarely done anything other than straight dramas so it is refreshing to see him in the film such as this.
 46. I watched Darkman again after its release 16 years ago, and it was as enjoyable to watch now as it was then. The special effects remain impressive and haven't aged in comparison to the likes of the original Terminator. It is a film that can be appreciated in many respects; making it in my opinion, one of the most underrated films of all time.

Casting, writing, acting, music score, and directorship are all well executed here. With empathy to the audience, it strongly establishes the story and characters from the beginning and offers a plausible explanation for the creation of 'Darkman'.

The director pays tribute to several classics throughout the film. There is an 'Oz'-like scarecrow dance and scenes reminiscent of Hitchcock films and the Phantom of the Opera. However, with great foresight, this film now serves as a model for any comic-book hero-oriented movie (even though the Darkman character was not based on a comic book!).

One memorable performance comes from Larry Drake, who plays a powerful thug that collects 'trophies' from his victims. I remember back when the film came out that many were taken aback by his casting, since he was best known back then for playing a mentally retarded character on television's 'LA Law'. He was completely believable in this role, and arguably deserved of Oscar consideration.

I can't say enough about this film. With a romantic sub-plot it should even appeal to audiences of the female persuasion (I hesitate to call it a date movie although it was back in 1990 for us!).

Sit back and enjoy a classic from the last 20 years and be thoroughly entertained...
 47. Darkman is big, stupid and wonderful -- an absurd, grand-scale adventure and a vicious comedy rolled into one nasty, unpleasant, hard-to-resist mess. [24 Aug. 1990, p.E1]
 48. According to Bruce himself at a UK convention in March 2008, he was never down for the role. He did confirm however that he supplied much of the voice work. The European DVD has a small cut due to it being distributed in the UK, where the BBFC used to have a problem with the depiction of certain Asian weapons in movies. It is hard to say. There is a shot that establishes where the line is and shows that Westlake is already standing very close to it when he gets there, so it is possible that he crossed it on the last throw when he knocked the bottles down and not realized it. If Westlake was paying attention, the fact that he is so certain that he did not cross the line would set the interpretation that the guy at the stand really was trying to cheat him. While both interpretations involve the aspect of his inability to control his temper making Westlake/Darkman more unpredictable, dangerous and susceptible to violence; only the one in which the guy actually cheated Westlake would involve him getting what he deserves when Westlake beats him up. Bottom line, if you want to believe that the scene's only purpose was to put further focus on Westlake's growing instability, then he did cross the line (though either way, the underlying meaning is there). But if you want to believe that the guy was being an unfair jerk, you'll say Westlake was behind the line. a5c7b9f00b
