  1. He pulled an item from a sealed pouch in his tac­ti­cal suit, resembling two sy­rin­ges side-by-side with a shared noz­zle. Each cyl­in­der con­tained an in­ert chem­i­cal com­po­nent, which, when mixed to­geth­er, be­came a sticky gel that re­acted on con­tact with met­als. The ex­o­ther­mal com­pound burned even un­der­wa­ter or in a vac­u­um, re­act­ing violently enough to chew through steel in se­conds. Fish­er ap­plied a fat blob of the com­bined goop to the in­dus­tri­al-grade lock hold­ing the grille shut, and watched it fizz and crum­ble.
