SI: Well, I'm recording. So.

CD: And I'm not uncomf-comfortable with you recording, but I understand that you are. Skylar, this is a letter asking you to cease putting up posters that you are putting up last week and today without permission. And-

SI: No thanks.

CD: The letter is yours.

SI: Okay. (inaudible)  No thanks. I will not stop.

CD: You will stop, Skylar.

SI: No. The public-it says public posting, so I- presumably means its for posting things for public-

CD: Skylar, I'm informing you now there's a policy: your posters have to be approved and your posters have upset several students.

SI: Well, that's their problem, not mine.

CD: Well, it is becoming your problem- (inaudible)

SI: Well, okay-

CD: Because an equal oppurtunity investigation is going to be launched and you're going to be urged to come in, give evidence and talk to-

SI: So, you're saying that even though this is a Catholic school, making posters that explicitly say what the Catholic Church teaches on the issues is somehow discrimination?

CD: Skylar, the Catholic Church doesn't teach-

SI: Yeah. Actually-

CD: that homosex is sin.

SI: Actually, yeah it does. It-it actually teaches it-

CD: You know what? We're-I'm not arguing, just (inaudible). I'm going to ask you-

SI: Here it is, yeah.

CD: not to-

SI: Cathecism of Catholic Church paragraph-

CD: Skylar?

SI: 2359. Is that-

CD: I'm asking you not to put any more posters up-

SI: You can't -

CD: Without proper-

SI: It's my proper-my private property. Please give it back to me.

CD: Did you print it here on campus?

SI: No, I did not. Because you guys locked out my print account.

AL: Which is, unfortunately, um, we had to do.

SI: You didn't have to. You chose to.

CD: Yes we did.

AL: We had to based on our policy.

SI: What policy?

AL: You, you-you don't want to have a conversation with us, so...

SI: Well, I'm asking you a question. So if you don't answer, that means you're not wanting to answer me.

CD: The policy is that you cannot post posters without approval. You didn't do it. So you were informed of that, and you were telling us blatently that the policies of the campus that you're not- you are not subject to them. So, we're telling you now that you're not allowed to do it until you've received approval. But I'm also telling you that those posters have become incredibly upsetting; are seen as hostile by some people and that-

SI: Well then they shouldn't be at a Catholic school if they think it-the Catholic teaching is hostile to them.

AL: That-that's not for you to determine. As to wheter or not it-

SI: Well that's for them to-Yeah. It's for them to determine. But the Cathecism in the Catholic Church is very explicit and I'm not saying anything that's contrary to the Catholic Church. So the fact that this is a Catholic school and you're telling me to not be saying Catholic things because they're offending people.

CD: I'm telling you right now not to post posters without permission.

SI: And since it's-

CD: And I'm telling you-

SI: That's a public posting board. That means I can then though, right?

CD: That is not. Everyone has to get their-

SI: It says public-

CD: poster approved.

SI: Well, most of those don't have initals on them from Patrick Harris or anything on them. So.

CD: Well, Patty White, actually, director of marketing/communications and (inaudible) services is the one that approves those. So I-I'm informing you and you're going to be getting an email from Rene McMahon that will-

SI: And I'll be deleting that.

CD: Well, if you don't respond to that email, you can be subject to other actions and other disciplinary action. You are subject-you have to-you're part of this community, Skylar. And I'm asking you simply not to do that and then if you feel that you are justified in doing that, then you need to go through the proper channels

SI: Is this gonna be like, that, uh, that-that other time something happened where you guys just decided to throw out all the rules anyways and get me in trouble even though that I did nothing that broke any of the rules?

CD: Skylar, I didn't get you in trouble and I'm not going to discuss that.

SI: I-I wasn't ever in trouble

CD: Yeah. I didn't get you in trouble, I-

SI: Well then you-you made the descision and to not only put sanctions against me, but to also deny my appeal.

CD: I made the descision to deny your appeal.

SI: And you're on the board that made the descisions-

CD: No I di-I was not. No I was not. I'm not on the student comm-

SI: You were.

CD: No I'm not. I was not. So, I-I'm warning you, Skylar, okay?

SI: Okay, and I'm ignoring that warning.

CD: Okay. That's-

AL: Okay then.

CD: being recorded and um, I would really encourage you to respond to Rene and to meet with her. Okay?

SI: Maybe. Maybe I'll just start putting duct tape on the back of my posters instead.

AL: They'll still come down.

SI: At least it'll be a lot harder for you. Also, I'm pretty sure a lot of it-

CD: If you are seen doing that again...immediate disciplinary action will be taken, Skylar, and I'm ver- being very honest, okay?

SI: What're you gonna do, expel me for saying-

CD: Quite possibly.

SI: Okay, that will look very good in the news, won't it?

CD: Okay, Skylar we've told you. I don't-I-we don't-I'm not going to stand here and argue with you-

SI: Then don't.

CD: In front of everyone.

AL: I would-I would encourage you to read the letter, Skylar. But not now. I think the the conversation-

CD: I think so too.

AL: is over.

CD: (inaudible)

AL: I'm going to take that down.

SI: I'm go put it right back up if you do. So.

(Camera is now out of pocket, facing a laptop keyboard. Inaudible conversation is heard in background as SI follows AL down the stairs to the bulletin board at stair landing)

SI: (inaudible) you please read the fine print on the bottom of them too before you take 'em down.

[SI stands closely next to AL]

SI: You may want to read that fine print on the bottom of it.

AL: I've read it.

SI: Hmm.

[CD walks into frame, plainly irritated at SI thusfar]

CD: Skylar, stop right now. You have no right to record-

SI: Yes I do.

CD: No, you don't. I'm telling you this. Stop recording us! This is an illegal-

SI: The-then leave or I'll keep recording. By being here, you're implicit in that, so...

CD: Yeah, we are.

SI: You're implicit- (stutters) you're implying that I'm allowed to record by staying here while I'm recording. Also, this could be considered a public space so people can go in and out-

CD: Oh, goodness. This is-

SI: whenever they want.

CD: This is-

SI: And anyone can hear everything that's going on. So.

[AL is seen holding the posters SI had placed on the public board. SI makes an attempt to snatch them from AL's hand, but doesn't]

SI: I'm sorry. That's mine.

AL: Not any longer. Not any longer.

[SI follows AL down another set of stairs]

SI: Okay, well then, that's illegal. That's called theft and criminal mischief.

[Camera pans to table with two chairs, then SI makes another attempt to grab posters from AL's hand]

CD: You-you stop!

SI: Please give me my posters back.

AL: No.

SI: It's my property.

CD: I'm going to call the security (inaudible)

AL: No.

SI: Give me my posters back.

AL: No. They are not going back up.

SI: Well, I'd like 'em back anyways.

AL: They are not going back up.

SI: That doesn't matter. They're still mine. You can't just steal them.

CD: I'm going to have Annette call campus security

SI: Go ahead. Gimme my posters back and I'll leave. Also, there's still a pin in them. You might want to-

AL: I know.

SI: get that stuck in you. So.

AL: I know there's a pin there.

SI: Well, gimme my property back.

AL: No.

SI: Yeah.

AL: No.

SI: You have to. It's mine. I made an effort to keep that from being taken. It-It's still mine. I-I never I was never out of sight of those posters since they were hung up and I never relinquished my right to them being mine.

(CD is now on phone)

CD: Um, this is Catherine (inaudible)

SI: So please give them back. I was sitting on that bench the whole time they were up and I was waiting. I was,like-l fig-I wanted to see who took 'em down

AL: No.

SI: Yes.

(AL proceeds to walk away from SI)

SI: Give me my posters back.

AL: Skylar, I'm walking away now.

SI: Yeah, and I'm following you because you still have my property and I'd like it back.

[CD and AL continue to walk down a couple of hallway while SI persues]

SI: Give me my property back, or I will call the police.

CD: (inaudible) She's calling security.

SI: If you do that, I will file a police report if you destroy them.

[SI continues to follow CD and AL. They talk amongst themselves, but a majority is inaudible]

SI: So are you guys saying that somebody leaves something on campus and they sit near it. Then you guys can just take it and destroy it? 'Cause that's what you're doing. So what kind of implications does that have for all kinds of things, you know?

CD: Don't say anything (inaudible)

AL: Okay.

(Silence)

SI: Maybe you can just hand them over and that would be the end of it. So, it's kind of silly.

AL: You know-You know, we're gonna go now.

SI: You know I have more of those, right? Like, it's not-

CD: And-

SI: I mean, it's not even doing anything- I just like my property back.

CD: and I'm sure you do. Don't post them on the bulletin board here at Carroll.

SI: Okay.

CD: Do not post them here.

SI: Alright. I'll put them on the walls.

CD: No, you won't.

SI: Well, please give me my private property.

CD: Skylar?

SI: Return my property right now.

CD: Skylar?

SI: Return my property or I believe under law I have the right to use a little bit of force. [threat]

CD: No, you don't. No, you don't.

SI: Somebody took my stuff and I'd like to get it back now.

CD: Because you posted things on a bulletin board against Carroll policy-

SI: Yes. Okay, so um-

CD: And you were told not to.

SI: Yes, right. That doesn't mean it's yours.

CD: Well, it doesn't mean we can't take it down and take it

SI: Well, okay. So here's the thing: right now upstairs, I have my laptop sitting on a bench up there-

CD: Go get it. Go get your laptop.

SI: No. No, I'm saying that does that mean that since that's left on Carroll property, you guys could just take it and destroy it?

CD: No. We wouldn't do that.

SI: No? Exactly. So the posters the same thing.

CD: No it's not.

SI: And if the poster was a computer that I hung on the wall, would you guys take it down with a hammer and?

CD: Skylar-

SI: No, you wouldn't.

CD: Skylar, we're not trying to-

SI: You wouldn't because that wouldn't make sense. That would be stupid. So, give me my property back.

(silence)

SI: You do realize it's the same thing, right?

CD: No, it is not. No, it is not.

SI: Then explain how it isn't.

CD: I don't need to explain to you.

SI: No. Do. Please.

CD: No.

SI: Because I don't understand how you can't draw that connection.

CD: (inaudible)

SI: Okay, well, you will be giving me my property back.

CD: No we won't.

SI: Okay, well I will be filing a police report and maybe something in civil court too. It only costs twenty dollars to file. I can do that.

CD: We need security coming up over here (inaudible)

AL: You called (inaudible) right?

CD: Yeah I called.

SI: Please hand me my property.

AL: Nope.

SI: Hand over my property now. This is your final warning. [threat]

AL: What? Your final warning?

CD: What? Are you threatening-

AL: Are you threatening?

SI: You said that.

CD: No.

AL: I don't think so.

SI: I'm gonna try and grab it from you.

CD: No, you weren't.

SI: Uh huh. Yeah I am. It's mine.

CD: You are-

SI: I have every right to take it.

CD: (inaudible)

SI: Yes I am

[SI then lunges forward to attempt snatching the papers from AL]

CD: Skylar, no!

AL: Skylar, you need to stay away from me.

SI: You need to give me my property then.

[AL backs away]

AL: You need to keep your hands off of me.

SI: Give me my property.

AL: You will not be receiving these back.

SI: You will give them back or that is theft. You're stealing my property. Please return it at once.

AL: No.

[Camera pans over to unidentified female witness in hallway]

SI: That's mine. Return it.

CD: You have your letter. I would encourage you to-

SI: Yes, but I don't have the rest of my property-

CD: You need to go home.

SI: That is mine. I paid for the paper, paid for the ink, it's my printer-

CD: You posted them against policy.

SI: Yeah, that doesn't-Okay, I can leave all kinds of stuff around against your policy. But that doesn't mean it's yours for the taking.

(EW arrives to scene and intervenes)

EW: Actually it does.

SI: Okay, my computer's right there. That's probably against policy. Are you going to take it?

EW: That's not against policy. But we do have a confiscation policy where we confiscate anything that's against our policies-

SI: Okay, well it's mine. Give it back.

EW: Skylar?

SI: Give it back to me. It's still my property.

(Camera pans to left to show EL and CS standing in doorway)

EW: Skylar? Skylar, could you look at me please? I'm going to give you an option right now. You're going to have to choose. I do not wished to be videoed and do not wish for this to be-

SI: Then leave.

EW: -utilitzed any further.

SI: Then leave.

EW: I will not. I am an administrator here and you will listen to me. Here is your choice: I will call the police and they will escort you off campus and then we are done with all this nonsense but you will never return.

SI: (snickering)

EW: Or you may collect your items, you may leave, you may appeal the letter that you've been given and go through proper channels.

SI: I'd be fine to leave if they give-she gave me my property back.

EW: It's not your property.

SI: Yes it is!

EW: Excuse me-

SI: I posted it. But-

EW: Excuse me-

SI: I took measures to make sure it would not be taken down and I never left its sight. I was sitting on this bench the whole time.

EW: Okay. Once you post something publicly, once it leaves your possession-

SI: That computer is posted publicly right there.

EW: It's not posted publicly.

SI: Well, it's sitting there. Anyone can look at it just like anyone can look at a poster.

EW: It's your backpack, so obviously it belongs to somebody.

SI: Yeah, well-

EW: Skylar? Skylar?

SI: That poster belongs to-I made it very-

EW:You have an option.

SI: obvious the poster belonged to somebody too.

EW: You have an option. Choose right now. Am I calling the police or are you leaving?

CD: Skylar, just take your-

SI: I'm taking my posters back.

[AL backs up into hallway as SI approaches]

EW: Touch her and-

AL: Do not-

SI: I'm not gonna touch her, I'm going to touch my posters.

EW: Skylar, back off.

[SI once again lunges forward at AL attempting to snatch his posters from AL's hands]

EW: Skylar! Back off!

SI: Give me my property back-

EW: No.

SI: and I will.

EW: Skylar, you've been given an option. You will choose or I will choose for you. What is your choice?

SI: My choice is to take my property and leave.

EW: Your property is right over there.

SI: And it's also right there.

EW: No. That is not your property.

SI: How is it not my property?

EW: When it left your possession, it is no longer your-

EW: It never left my possession.

EW: It did-

SI: If that computer didn't-

EW: I'm calling the police now. Goodbye Skylar.

SI: Then the poster didn't either.

SI: If this computer did not leave my property, as you guys said-

EW: Skylar...

SI: then how did the poster leave my property?

EW: Skylar, you may leave or the police will escort you off campus. Are you choosing to have the police escort you off campus?

SI: I'm choosing-I'm choosing to take my property and leave.

EW: Great. Stay there. We'll wait for the police to determine his property then.

[Screen goes black]

(EW now on telephone with emergency dispatcher)

EW: Hi. My emergency is in Simperman Hall at Carroll Campus on the ground level or the first floor, actually. Uh, the building address here is-I don't(inaudible)...on Carroll Campus...Simperman. That's S as in Sam...

(Camera comes back on)

EW: I as in igloo. M, merit. P, Paul. E, (inaudible)  R, Roger.

SI: Why don't you just give it to me?

EW: M, Mary...

SI: You know they're available online. You could just print them off yourself if you want a copy. There's a website on the poster.

EW: I have a student here who has been provided a (inaudible) and asked to stop posting per our campus policy and is now approaching administrators trying to take back what he was posting and that's his property and is refusing to leave...Yes...

CD: Skylar, I think you want to go home and not-

SI: I do. I really, really want to go home. But I'd also like my property back.

SI: Yeah I can hear that.

EW: ...Campus side of the building, in the main lobby where you come in through the doors...uh which is terrible obviously...

SI: It's really. It's all on you. I mean, you could've just handed me when I asked. So, there's no condition to be put back up anyways. Can't you see that? I mean...

EW: (inaudible)...dark hair, wearing eyeglasses...(inaudible)

(fan or air conditioner shuts off)

EW: Mmhm...and if you just make officers aware that (inaudible)...Yes. My name is Emily Weideman. W-E-I-D-E-M-A-N...(inaudible)...

SI: What exactly are you guys gonna trespass me for? Taking back my property or being in this building?

CD: It's actually your behavior towards us right now, Skylar.

SI: Okay, well that's all on you because I asked nicely at first and that didn't get me anywhere, so I tried to take my property back. If someone like grabbed my backpack and walking off with it, I'd probably do a lot more than that to them to get it back.

GSO: Do you, um, do you, uh, realize that you may be expelled for terrorism-

SI: Yeah and I also realize I don't want to go to this college if you guys are gonna be stupid and do terrible things like this. So you're all mad because something slightly offensive, like to somebody, you know apparently?

GSO: Ev-everyone has choices.

SI: Yeah, and you know what? This is funny 'cause I actually posted lots of posters in the past without permission and you guys didn't-nobody actually cared at all. And they were up for sometimes months.It's kind of funny.

CD: You know, if you go and do what we're asking, you have an oppurtunity to try...in the process I talked to you about. I'm on the teacher's side. This is not good for you, Tyler-Skylar, it's not conductiv-conducive to a good outcome. So what encourages you-

SI: Yeah and you know what? I told you, I told you what you needed to do to make a good outcome.

CD: Well, you're not in charge around here.

SI: Okay, well you guys are stealing my property. I'm glad the police are showing up.

CD: We're not-

SI: Yeah, you are. I never relinquished control of that property when it was on the board. That is why I never left the area.

CD: Were you waiting-Were you waiting for someone to come and take it?

SI: Yeah 'cause it'd probably be within a few minutes after that 'cause people walked by and take stuff down. Like, if you walk by all the time and do stuff so I was curious  if it'd be a member of administration or just be another student trying to be all, I don't know, something.

CD: You're supposed to be in class right now, right?

SI: No, actually that class is, um, just some one on one meetings with a teacher for the next few days.It has no bearing on anyways, so.

CS: (inaudible)

SI: No, probably not 'cause they, um, misinterpreted school policies before to get me in trouble for something I didn't do. I was literally trying to complete an assignment.  Pe-People outside of Carroll didn't like that, so they called the police and the police couldn't do anything because I was in the right and Carroll decided "You know what? We're going to punish him for trying to do a photography assignment just because some person didn't like the photo." So.
