That day, he was looking around the altar on the island as usual. Protecting the seven Chaos Emeralds that sleep in the island’s depths and control the power of the “Pillar”; it was his given mission.

His name is Knuckles the Echidna. He is an echidna who his island friends call “Knuckle”
To him, who was born and raised on this island, all of the island’s nature and animals were his companions. And the one who protects his companions is the crystallized column of the Chaos Emeralds, the “Pillar”.

It happened quite suddenly.
When Knuckle tried to see if there was something wrong with one of the Chaos Emeralds, when he thought the Chaos Emerald sparkled and shone before his eyes, it started to vibrate abnormally.

The bewildered Knuckle had never seen such a phenomenon before.
The Chaos Emerald continued to vibrate violently before his eyes.
And then, when the vibration had reached its peak, a flash of light flickered with a kiiin sound.
Knuckle’s recollection felt like it was cut short, when he felt like his body was softly floating.

When Knuckle regained consciousness, his body had been thrown out of the altar.
What caught Knuckle’s eye, as he slowly got up and looked around, was that the Chaos Emerald altar was half-destroyed.
Knuckle rushed back into the altar.
However, the Chaos Emerald, which should have been there, had disappeared without even leaving any debris.

Stunned, Knuckle left the altar.
Then, when he powerlessly turned his gaze far away… he noticed something creepy had emerged near the lake.
Knuckle, who saw that it was a giant, round egg-like object, felt his spine chill.

“That large egg is the dragon of legend…”
This egg appeared in a legend depicted in the Chaos Emerald altar; there no doubt it was the egg that would bring calamity to this island.

For the next few days, Knuckle looked around the seven Chaos Emerald altars on the island, but all of the Chaos Emeralds had disappeared without a trace.
Then, as Knuckle still searched around the island without giving up, he encountered an unfamiliar man in the woods.

The man called himself Dr. Eggman; when he learned that Knuckle was the guardian of the Chaos Emeralds, he told him his story.
“I am a scientist who had come here to investigate that egg.
“Hmmm, if you’re the guardian of the Chaos Emeralds, then there’s something I must tell you.
“To be frank with you, there’s this bad hedgehog called Sonic who interferes with my research, and it seems as if this guy is after this island’s Chaos Emeralds.”

“The Chaos Emeralds are being targeted..!”
Through Dr. Eggman’s skillful lies, Knuckle had been fooled.
That was how Knuckle’s challenge to Sonic began.
