  The soldiers emerged from the farmhouse, the first of them saluting as he saw his commander. “Sir! There is no-one inside, but there is blood on the floor. An injured person was here.”

  The second soldier dithered on the threshold, squinting back into the darkened building as if he had seen something. “You,” called Choi, “what is it?”

  The second man never had the chance to respond. Choi saw a flash of movement as a loop of fencing wire flicked over the soldier’s head and snapped tight around his neck. Before the general’s shock could fade, the man was dragged back into the farmhouse by an unseen assailant, the door slamming shut behind him.

  Choi fired his semiautomatic at the wooden door and the men loitering outside did the same, bracketing the front of the farmhouse with bursts of fire. As the paroxysm of shots faded, he barked an order. “Get in there!”

  This time the ruined door collapsed off its hinges and fell inward under the impact of a forceful kick, and Choi followed his men inside.

  The luckless soldier dangled from a support beam holding up the roof, a snare made of heavy gauge wire cutting into his flesh. His neck had been broken and his eyes were lifeless.
