  1. The last thing she remembered before bullets clouded her sight is that she has been abandoned.
  2.
  3. Becoming a gunslinger for hire in the world of lies is something risky as nobody can be trusted. But, as it is a job that she can make an easy money to, she lived with it for years until she got a name for herself.
  4.
  5. That infamous ‘name’, however, while it took you for a greater heights to your job, it is also coming with its drawbacks.
  6.
  7. .
  8.
  9. When she came to, she’s already in one of the prison’s hospital. It’s not like she has been served a sentence before – she’s pretty much untouched even though the bounty on her head is pretty great. It’s just when she’s ever visited the quarter before, she remembered well to dislike its pungent antiseptic smell, as it is mixed with tobacco.
  10.
  11. That bullet must have ended her career.—it’s her first thought as her eyes emptily watched the boring white ceiling. She could feel a steel chain connected to her feet, a preemptive measure for a dangerous prisoner like her. She didn’t remember how many bullets struck to her ribs enough to immobilize her, it is unpleasant to recall how her vigilante days ended – so she ended her web of thoughts with a sigh.
  12.
  13. A gunslinger for hire like her is a lone wolf, no one will like to cash out for her freedom, the prison life is waiting for her or maybe a worst sentence is there for her.
  14.
  15. It is the end.
  16.
  17. “—It’s the first time I saw you so gloomy.”
  18.
  19. Maya shot up to the direction of the sing-song voice. A certain blue-haired woman in her suit and expensive coat, but her beloved jet black fedora is absent as she sit an inch away from the bed side, propped one of her legs up at the foot of the hospital bed.
  20.
  21. “You? What are you doing here, Boss—“
  22.
  23. “Don’t call me with that boring title, Kaoruko is fine,” the woman smiled ear-to-ear. “For now, that is, oh The Great Phoenix of Farewell?”
  24.
  25. “Didn’t they forget me once I’m arrested?” the bedridden woman chided.
  26.
  27. That mockery is outdated, or so the unmoving brunette could say. She didn’t really need an enough fame for her to get a codename like that, ‘Phoenix of Farewell’ – like the last, fleeting bird that you can see between life and death.
  28.
  29. “The world might, but I’m not.” Kaoruko chuckled. “I’m not exactly into sweet words hoping for your fast recovery, but I’m here for a job.”
  30.
  31. The bedridden woman crooked her brow. “For me?”
  32.
  33. Kaoruko nodded. It’s when the Boss directed the defeated woman’s attention to her fedora, which is located on a small table far from the bed. Kaoruko lifted the black hat up to reveal a small gun and a bayonet.
  34.
  35. “I know you’re thinking that I wanted to recruit you to my family; no, it’s not as simple as that,” Kaoruko tilted her head, as if she had guessed what the bedridden woman have in mind. “I want to hire you to become a personal maid for my adopted child.”
  36.
  37. The request took the gunslinger aback. A maid, the Boss said?
  38.
  39. “And you think I’ll accept because you’ll pay for my treatment and my fee out from this place?”
  40.
  41. “Yup, yup. My intuition said that you’ll accept my offer~” the Boss said merrily. “It’s not like you have any place to go except Hell, right, Tendou Maya-san? Take this as a chance to redeem yourself of your past sins.”
  42.
  43.
  44. .
  45. .
  46. .
  47.
  48.
  49. Rewinding back again to Kaoruko’s term and condition in the hospital, it is surreal for someone like her—who’s not even backing out easily on the face of rough negotiation—agreed willy-nilly.
  50.
  51. After Maya is discharged, Kaoruko’s black limo has waited to pick her up on the parking lot. Kaoruko is there to be the first person to congratulate on her recovery and then the business talk chimed in almost naturally.
  52.
  53. Kaoruko told Maya about the little ‘adopted’ child, a girl named Nana. She is ten years old now, and because the family’s circumstances, she mostly spent her time indoors or in the expanse of land belonged to Kaoruko’s mansion.
  54.
  55. Maya wouldn’t be an ordinary household maid – Kaoruko prepared a handgun and knife for her to use in case of emergency. She’d be doubling work as a bodyguard and a caretaker for the said child.
  56.
  57. “Why a maid?”
  58.
  59. Maya asked after months she never inquired about the reason why a big boss like Kaoruko employed her as a ‘maid’.
  60.
  61. “You see, I don’t want Nana to see the dark world,” Kaoruko mused, she lowered her fedora. “You’ll know later when you sees her for yourself.”
  62.
  63.
  64. .
  65.
  66.
  67. As she arrived at the Kaoruko’s huge mansion, an array of maids and butlers welcomed her arrival. A magenta-haired maid stepped forward from the crowd, bowing courteously to the Boss before looking at Maya’s way. This maid might be smaller, even smaller than Kaoruko, but she got a certain air of authority against everyone else in the room to speak directly to the boss.
  68.
  69. Perhaps she’s the Chief Maid of the house?
  70.
  71. “Is this the new maid that you personally recruited, Boss?” the Chief Maid asked. “She … doesn’t look like a maid to me. One of those ex-mercenary or something?”
  72.
  73. “Now, now, Futaba. Don’t pry on people’s past~” Kaoruko jeered. “She’d be in your care before she’s assigned to serve Nana.”
  74.
  75. Maya caught a sign between Kaoruko and Futaba, a signal of something that Maya didn’t quite catch. Then again, the Chief Maid nodded to the request without further questioning.
  76.
  77. “Well then, what’s your name?”
  78.
  79. “Tendou Maya, ma’am.”
  80.
  81. “Alright, Tendou. Clench you teeth; we’ll be drilling you to be THE FINEST MAID for Milady.”
  82.
  83. For some reason, Maya thought she had witnessed a glimpse of Hell’s gate when Futaba said that – yet it is too late to back down now. After all, Maya has accepted the job.
  84.
  85.
  86. .
  87. .
  88. .
  89.
  90.
  91. “—Maya?”
  92.
  93. Maya blinked. The moment of silence between the dinner and supper surely took her to a moment of nostalgia.
  94.
  95. Now she’s in Nana’s room. Maya usually waited for the little girl to sort out her things (Maya didn’t know what she is doing aside arranging her books and her stuffed plushies in her room to be honest) before Nana said that she will sleep soon.
  96.
  97. “What will you read for me today before sleep?” Nana asked cutely as she pulled on Maya’s hand while the maid escorted Nana to her bed.
  98.
  99. “Let’s see,” Maya hummed. “Oh! How about I told you about the story when I’m travelling with a ship?”
  100.
  101. Nana’s eyes lighted gleefully. “Maya rides on a ship before? I want to know, I want to know!”
  102.
  103. “Milady, don’t swing my hand like that, it might fall off you know.”
  104.
  105. “E-Eeeh?”
  106.
  107. Nana went wide-eyed, as if her round eyes can be any rounder than how it is. There’s this delight sometimes when you teased an innocent little girl, Maya indulged on it a few times to gauge little Nana’s cute reactions.
  108.
  109. “Sorry, I’m just kidding.” Maya concluded with a chuckle.
  110.
  111. It has only been a few months since she finally graduated to be Chief Maid’s student – and she was indeed seeing a glimpse of Hell called housework, overclock working hours full of surprises and care-taking of the children. Surprisingly, everything has going quite smoothly … or it is just a sign that Maya is getting used to this kind of work.
  112.
  113. Never in her wildest dream that a woman whom had known firearms and wars for the rest of her life is to settle in a big mansion, with a frilly outfit, a title of ‘maid’, and to life a live of ordinary purity.
  114.
  115. … Is the life of a Mafia Famiglia this peaceful, really?
