  1. Dear Diary,
  2. It was impossible to get Anon out of the house today. Ever since he found Sayori hanging, he’s locked himself away, unwilling to talk to anybody. I tried knocking on his door, but he never answered. Every time I call, I’m forced to leave a message. I miss him, a lot. I wish there was some way of getting to him, it’s not healthy for him to be cooped up with his thoughts like that. Next time I go over, I’m going to try to leave some cupcakes for him.
  3. Papa didn’t let me eat again today. I was starving today too, but he said that dinner was only for him tonight. It was my fault, really: I forgot to do the dishes after dinner last night because I was too excited for the festival and ended up doing them 10 minutes late. I’m glad Papa didn’t yell at me though, I hate it when Papa yells.
  4. I’ll write again tomorrow, I’ll let you know if I get an update with Anon.
  5. Sincerely,
  6. Natsuki.
  7. Natsuki closes her diary and places it on her nightstand. Her head was clouded, filled with thoughts of Anon. She checks her phone to see if Anon sent her anything. Nothing. Natsuki sighs and clutches her stuffed animal. Every time she thinks about Anon, Sayori, and the incident, she feels the pit in her stomach get deeper. What if Anon wasn’t eating? What if Anon never came outside again? What if Anon hurt himself? Natsuki squeezes the worn doll. That was it, tomorrow she’d—
  8. Natsuki’s phone starts ringing. She scrambles to pick it up, desperately hoping her father didn’t stir from the cheery ringtone. She doesn’t have time to check the Caller ID as she puts the phone to her ear.
  9. “Hello?”
  10. “Hey, Natsuki.” Anon’s voice emanates from the small speaker on her flip phone.
  11. “Anon!” Natsuki was at a loss for words. It took all she had not to burst into tears when she heard his voice.
  12. “I know it’s been a while, sorry I haven’t answered the door.” Anon droned on, as if he were being forced to speak. “It’s just, I’ve been, busy, if you can call it that.” Anon breathes through a wheezing, raspy chuckle.
  13. “Natsuki, it’s really hard right now. I feel like I can’t breathe, and frankly, I don’t want to.” Anon’s voice starts to waver, his breath getting shallow over the phone.
  14. “Please help me. I need you right now.”
  15. “I’ll be right there!” Natsuki grabs her coat and rushes out of her room. She checks if she has her key on her, then bolts out the front door, slamming it shut. She thought about her dad for a second, but Anon was more important. She couldn’t care less right now about what her dad would do to her when she got back.
  16. Natsuki gently taps on the door, standing in the dark. Again, there’s no answer, so she tries the handle. To her surprise, it’s unlocked, so she invites herself into the moonlit home.
  17. “Anon?” She calls out to the shadows in front of her. She creeps into the dark, hoping to see any sign of him.
  18. “Hey, Natsuki…” Anon shambles out from the dusk, like a mummy wrapped in modern clothing. Anon’s hair was tangled, like he hadn’t washed it in days. His eyes drooped, underneath them an inhuman shade of gray. He stared at her with an apologetic smile, wearing it as a shield to the world. Natsuki eyes Anon up and down. His hands were visibly clammy, stained by the tears of his regret. Natsuki huffs, then smiles at the sight of Anon’s safety.
  19. “Natsuki, I,” Anon falls to his knees, and covers his face with his hands. His entire body shakes, as if he’s a ticking timebomb.
  20. “Honestly,” Natsuki kneels in front of him. “you look like you haven’t seen the sun in days. Come here, you dummy.” Natsuki opens her arms and invites Anon into her. Anon nods and rests his head into her chest.
  21. “It’s alright, you can let it out now. You don’t have to suffer alone anymore.” Natsuki cradles his head in her arm, then rests her chin on the top of his head. It was a little greasy, but she was more than willing to put up with it.
  22. Anon breaks down, releasing all the pent-up emotion into Natsuki’s arms. He howled like a dying animal, sobbing into Natsuki’s shoulder. He wrapped his arms around her and clung to her, in fear of being dragged back into the darkness of his heart.
  23. “Natsuki, she was just hanging there, her eyes staring at me like I could have done anything to prevent it, and I know I should have, it’s all my fault, I just- “ Anon’s cries grow louder. “It’s all my fault, Natsuki! It’s all my fault, it’s all my fault it’s all my fault it’s all my fault!” Anon sobs into Natsuki’s shoulder, a rush of tears flowing from him as his voice escapes his lips.
  24. “Shh, Shh, it’s not your fault, you did all you could.” Natsuki rubs Anon’s back as he empties his heart. The two stay like this for some time, until Anon starts to calm down. Natsuki lifts her head up, and combs her fingers through his hair. “Come on, let’s get you in the shower, a nice bath’ll help you feel better.”
  25. Anon doesn’t respond, and instead starts to take deep, monotonous breaths. Natsuki chuckles to herself and kisses the top of his head. “Alright, you can sleep here for a little while.”
  26. When Anon awakens, he finds himself laying on the couch. He looks around for any sign of Natsuki. “Just a dream, huh?” He thought to himself. He closes his eyes and rolls over back to sleep when he hears a girl’s voice cry out to him from the kitchen.
  27. “Oh no you don’t!” Natsuki rushes outside to the living room and bats anon on the head with her spatula.
  28. “Ow! What was that for?” Anon rubs his head where the utensil had hit him.
  29. “I did not slave over this oven all morning just for you to go back to bed. You are going to get up and enjoy this ultra-special breakfast I made just for you or else!” Natsuki huffs and heads back into the kitchen. She brings out 2 eggs, some orange juice, and a pink cupcake, decorated with rainbow frosting, and speckled with sprinkles.
  30. “Eat.” Natsuki shoves the tray at Anon. He takes the fork and digs in, remembering how hungry he was since the incident. After they’re done eating, Natsuki shoots Anon an expectant glance.
  31. “Well?” Natsuki taps her foot, waiting for a response.
  32. “Eh, it was alright. The cupcake was some of your finest work though.” Anon shoots her a sly grin.
  33. “Alright? I worked hard on that!” Natsuki pouts at first, then chuckles as she wipes her face with her napkin.
  34. “Feeling any better?”
  35. “Yeah, a bit.” Anon turns on the television, which reads 9AM.
  36. “Holy shit, Natsuki, aren’t you gonna be late?” Anon looks at the calendar on the wall, then to Natsuki.
  37. “Nah, it’s Saturday today, so I’m good. More importantly, we should get you out of those clothes and in the shower, you’re starting to stink.” Natsuki makes a face, then wafts the air with her hands. Anon laughs, the first time in weeks. The cold air around the room vanishes and is replaced by the usual back-and-forth of Natsuki and Anon’s antics. Anon starts to clean himself up while Natsuki cleans the mess she made in the kitchen.
  38. “Hey Anon, I brought over the newest copy of Parfait Girls, I was wondering if you wanted to read- “
  39. Natsuki is surprised by Anon wrapping his arms around her. She squirms in his grasp, but he doesn’t let go, instead only squeezing tighter.
  40. “Anon! What are you doing, you almost scared the heck out of me!”
  41. “Natsuki,” Anon rests his head into her shoulder, and squeezes the small girl’s frame. “thanks, a lot. Thank you, so much for being here with me.” Anon begins to tear up again.
  42. Natsuki Smiles to herself. “Of course, Anon. That’s what I’m here for, you know? Whenever you need something sweet, I’ll be your cupcake for you to take a bite out of!”
  43. “hmm, that sounds like a good idea.” Anon playfully chomps on Natsuki’s shoulder.
  44. “Ewww! I didn’t mean literally! Gosh Anon, you’re such a dork sometimes!” Natsuki blushes and wiggles out of his arms. The two of them share a laugh, and the room fills with the warmth of their bond.
