40. In 2054, Paris is a labyrinth where all movement is monitored and recorded. Casting a shadow over everything is the city's largest company, Avalon, which insinuates itself into every aspect of contemporary life to sell its primary export, youth and beauty. In this world of stark contrasts and rigid laws, the populace is kept in line and accounted for.
 41. Paris, 2054: a dark motion-captured world of shadows and right angles. Ilona Tasuiev, a brilliant young scientist, is kidnapped, and her employer, Avalon, a major health and beauty corporation, wants her found. Karas, a jaded police captain, is assigned to find her, fast. He seeks help from her sister, Bislane, and they are soon uncovering identify theft, missing files, and hints that something back in 2006 may explain what's going on. Ilona's mentor, Avalon's vice president, a Japanese researcher, an underworld boss, and Bislane's drug connection all figure in the mix. So does an attraction between Karas and Bislane. What's behind the kidnapping? Who's the victim?
 42. There are so many references to auteurs/directors and several genres (homages?) contained within this film, that I can't believe its rating of 6.5!!! Who on earth ARE you people? I, for one, didn't need to watch the post-production extras on the DVD... and I doubt the need for any of you to do same.

It has STYLE written all over it - indeed, EUROSTYLE - and FRENCH POMO specifically. Yes, there are obvious similarities to "Blade Runner" but, I would argue that they are shallow, surface resemblances. One could argue, given the soundtrack, for similarities with "The 5th Element". But surely, this is a feature of modern French cinema...

Similarities with "Sin City"? No. Apart from the the obvious 'black-and-white' comparison, they have nothing in common. "City" is ultra-violent and sexually-charged.

"Renaissance" owes more to the '30s and '40s noir - and it must be said - romantic products of French cinema and thus the '50s and '60s revival/regurgitation of same. If the film had been 'live', one could perceive Alain Delon as the 'hero', and 'La Bardot' as his foil/love interest.

To discuss the plot would be to destroy any reason for a viewer to enjoy the film. However...

This DVD gives one the choice to select DTS as sound reproduction: turn it up loud, be proud, and revel in a soundscape far superior to the Dolby 5.1. Maximum enjoyment comes through the use of headphones...

A VERY superior exercise in animation.
 43. I heard many bad things about "Renaissance": That it was boring and flawed, that it was a rip-off of "Sin City". Too good I didn't paid attention to any of that criticism. "Renaissance" is a good, interesting thriller with incredible visuals and a fascinating story. A great homage to classic detective, films, with a great atmosphere. And just because it is black and white, it doesn't make it a rip-off, and what is more, I liked it more than "Sin City", because unlike that film, "Renaissance", this was subtle, thrilling and realistic, without any of the stupid and cartoonish excesses from movies as "Wanted" or "300".

"Renaissance" is a good, underrated film that deserves a lot more of appreciation.I give this ten stars.
 44. For a little while, the film is dazzling. Then it's dizzying. Then it's just kind of . . . wearying. That's not because it's in black-and-white; so was "Sin City". There's just something terribly, tragically dull about Renaissance.
