  1. “Anon, I have to go on another trip for work, so I’ll be leaving you with a babysitter.”
  2. Anon grunted in reply, toying with the cereal in front of him.
  3. “I’ve got you a new babysitter this time. Ever since the last time, Mr. Johnson refuses to sit for you, so-“ Anon’s mother is interrupted by a rapping on the door.
  4. “Oh, that must be her. You better be good for this one, I swear to god.”
  5. Anon’s mom opens the door. Standing in the doorway is a girl, taller than Anon, but still young. She wore a short blue skirt, a gray formal jacket, and a huge white bow on the back of her head.
  6. The girl steps inside and takes her shoes off at the door. “Hello, again Mrs. Ymous. It’s good to see you again.”
  7. “Oh, Monika it’s so good to see you! Anon, come here, come meet your new babysitter, her name is Monika.”
  8. Monika looks to Anon and flashes him a smile. “Ah, you must be Anon! It’s nice to meet you, I’m Monika.” She outstretches her hand. Anon stares at it, his deadpan eyes studying her hands.
  9. “…Ahaha!” Monika looks back to Anon’s mother. “He’s a bit shy, is he?” She takes her hand away and turns to face her.
  10. “He’s usually so polite! Anon, can you come with me for a moment?” Anon’s mom looks at him with venom and takes his hand. She drags him upstairs into his bedroom and pushes him into the room.
  11. Anon stumbles back and falls, his butt making a soft thud on the ground. He winces for a second, his eyes tearing a bit.
  12. “Listen here, I swear to god if I find out you aren’t good for Monika, the next time I leave for one of these things I’m leaving you here by yourself with a red ass, got that?”
  13. Anon mumbles, his voice moving to the floor. His mother grabs his ear and yanks him to his feet, and Anon’s hands desperately claw at his mother’s grip.
  14. “Got that?!” Anon’s mom spits her question through her teeth.
  15. “Y-yes!”
  16. “Yes what?!”
  17. “Y-yes Mommy!”
  18. Anon’s mom drops him on the ground once more, and Anon grasps his ear, his face scrunched up from the pain.
  19. “Good boy. Now come downstairs.” Anon’s mom walks down the spiral staircase, and Anon shambles after her, trying not to trip on the tails of his pajama pants.
  20. “Now, Anon’ll eat pretty much anything, so feed him whatever you like, and he must be in bed by 9 PM. The key to the house is in the bowl on the table, as well as some money for food for the week. Don’t let him in the basement, and don’t let him outside for too long without watching him, okay?”
  21. Monika’s brow furrowed for a second hearing that last request but shook her head and smiled anyway.
  22. “Leave it to me, he won’t have a bad day while I’m around, ahaha~”
  23. Anon’s mother grabs her things and heads out to the car. Anon hears the car drive away, and the two are left alone.
  24. Monika looks to Anon, and Anon looks away from her.
  25. “Well… Hi, Anon! I’m Monika, it’s nice to meet you!” Monika walks over to him and sits in front of him.
  26. Anon doesn’t reply to her, and instead crosses his arms over his chest and backs up.
  27. “Hey, I’m not going to hurt you, why are you so afraid?” Monika frowns, crawling over to him.
  28. “Leave me alone…” Anon’s young voice was a whisper, his body barely breathing in enough air to be any louder.
  29. Monika looks up at Anon’s face. “Hey, did something happen up there? It’s alright, you can tell me.”
  30. Anon shakes his head. His arms start to release their grip, and he holds out a quivering hand
  31. “I wasn’t being polite earlier, I’m sorry. My name is Anon, it’s nice to meet you.”
  32. Monika looks between the shivering hand in front of her, and the eyes of the small boy in front of her. Even for a young boy, he was skinny, his features soft.
  33. “You don’t have to shake my hand if you don’t want to Anon, it’s alright.” Monika smiles at him, and Anon takes his hand away. His hands loosely cover up his chest, meeting in the center of his worn black t-shirt.
  34. Monika sits by the wall on the staircase and pats the spot next to her. “It seems like you’ve got a story to tell, Anon. Why don’t you tell me why you’re so afraid of me?”
  35. Anon instead sits across from her, his eyes trained on the girl.
  36. “The last one was… scary…” Anon hugged his knees to his chest.
  37. “He would always smell weird, and feed me these weird candies… They made me feel fuzzy, and he would touch my chest and my butt a lot…”
  38. Monika’s mouth was wide open as she listened to Anon. “Oh my god… Anon, I’m so sorry.”
  39. “I told my mom about it, but she just hit me and tell me to behave…”
  40. “Anon…” Monika crawled over to him. “If you’re willing to trust me, I promise I won’t ever touch you without your permission, okay?”
  41. Anon doesn’t move, and only continues to look at the floor.
  42. “Do you mind if I sit next to you?” Monika scooches up to him, and he shakes his head.
  43. “I’m really sorry he touched you like that Anon. You don’t deserve to be treated like that, not from him and not from your mom, either.”
  44. “…You’re nicer than he was.” Anon squeezes his knees. “When he was being nice to me, it was scary… he would always have this smile on his face while he was feeding me the candy…”
  45. “Anon, please don’t ever take candy from that man again. It’s not really candy, that’s pretty dangerous stuff to make you pass out.”
  46. “There was one time I didn’t wanna eat the candy, because I had an upset tummy… he made me eat it anyway, and the next thing I knew Mommy was spanking me because I threw up all over Mr. Johnson…”
  47. “Oh Anon… Listen, while I’m here, I promise I’m going to protect you from that man. I won’t ever let someone do something like that to you again, I swear.”
  48. “…Really? You’re not going to hit me like Mommy or Mr. Johnson?” Anon looked up at her. She looked into his eyes and smiled, her radiant aura of protection bringing some light back into Anon’s young eyes.
  49. “I would never Anon, I promise.”
  50. Anon looks back down and pauses. He grips his pants and stands up in front of Monika.
  51. “Anon?” Monika looks up at him.
  52. Anon outstretches his hand. “H-Hi, I’m Anon. It’s nice to meet you!”
  53. Monika stood up and placed his hand in hers, shaking it. “Nice to meet you, I’m Monika. I’ll be taking care of you for the week, so what would you like to-“ Monika is interrupted as the wind is taken out of her.
  54. Anon mumbles into her stomach as his arms squeeze her frame. “Thank you…”
  55. Monika wraps her arms around his head and embraces him. “No problem Anon. Tell you what,” Monika pulls away from him and leans down to his level.
  56. “I’ll be your big sister from now on, how’s that sound?”
  57. “Mmkay.” Anon wipes his tears from his eyes and giggles a bit.
  58. “Now come on, why don’t we find something to do?”
