- AMITY: "Of course it's our job to change shit. Who else is going to? Idiots might tell you the Kingdoms, or the Lantern Bearers, or the Verdant Grasp or whoever, but relying on massive organizations to arrange the gears of your community seems like a shit idea if you ask me. It's cliché, but if you want shit done right, you do it yourself, yeah?"
- AUGUST: "I dunno'. It's not something I really think about, which... like, you'd guess I would because I'm a Warden or whatever, right? But it's not really... Kattua's pretty nice, I guess. No one here is hassling me about it, no one seems judgmental, so... I've never really bothered to think about it. I'd rather just keep my head down and live my life and let other people do whatever! Like, within reason though."
- AYA: "Wow, that's a ... really incisive question? Hmm. Well, I guess the way I'd put it is, I can't really imagine anything other than being proactive. It's second nature, and I would hope it would be for most people, to try and change things around them for the better. I wouldn't want to end up being... passive on everything, stuck in the status quo. That's how things start to decay."
- CLAIRE: "It is our duty as members of a civilization. We owe it to those who have come and gone before us, who have suffered countless horrors and injustices, to build a world where such things are no longer possible. There will never be perfection, but we must always reach for it nevertheless."
- CYRIL: "I used to be the kind of person who would keep his head down for the sake of his ambitions. I didn't like what I saw, but I also didn't care enough to sacrifice my own desires to be some kind of iconoclast. In retrospect, that was a terrible mistake; it cost me my soul, in more ways than one. If I should close my mouth ever again, let it be in death."
- DARCY: "That this is even a question is strange to me! It seems like it has an obvious answer, right? Who would say anything other than 'we owe it to each other to fight for a better world as much as we possibly can'? I think complacency is itself a kind of evil, which must be rooted out."
- ELEANOR: "I don't care. Other people care enough for me, but I've lost all ability to care. No interest in discussing this, no interest in litigating whether or not other people ought to be doing more, I think philosophical discussions like this are fucking *mind numbing* and I think you should make the world a better place by getting out of my face, actually. How about that?"
- ESTELLE: "What sorrow it would be... to be adrift, carried along by an invisible current, and to have no say in the course. You may as well... slip below the water... and disappear, altogether."
- EZRA: "I find this to be a curious question, because I imagine many would answer something along the lines of 'I will leave this to people who are wiser than I'. And perhaps that, in itself, is a wise sentiment, but I think many people do not recognize the extent to which they are agents of social change in ways both visible and not. Whatever you might answer, it's very likely that your answer might not reflect your actions or their consequences. A man who claims to want to bring about positive change might be drooling venom, and a man who claims to have no interest in social change might have already positively affected his community a thousand times over. So... what use is my word to you, hm?"
- FEN: "This seems like a rather obvious question, begging for a rather obvious answer. Of course, I believe that pushing the status quo forward is the just thing to do--no applause, please, the good that I do for the world is its own reward. Mm. I just cannot help but think that no matter your answer to this question, it's self-aggrandizing; either you express pride in what should be a bare-minimum component of the social contract, or you smugly position yourself 'above' the petty concerns of your community, and either way... you look like a bit of a jackass."
- FOXFIRE: "Foxfire make world better for Foxfire. Foxfire looks out for Foxfire. You also look out for Foxfire. You have jerky in your bag, I smell it. Give it to me. Give it!"
- FRAN: "The banalities of the social contract are far in my past. I have done my fair share for this world, and I care only to reap now what I have sown. I gave my mortal life to good cause; let my immortal life be mine, and leave me in peace."
- GAIL: "Well, that's a bit of a dumb question, ain't it? Everyone's got a responsibility to do the right thing... is that supposed to be something people are debating? I dedicated my entire life to trying to change things for the better. I can't imagine anything else."
- HAIJA: "I seek not to answer questions such as these. Mortals must reach their own conclusions on these matters, I feel, or else their sense of ethics will be rooted in the firmament, rather than the ground they share with their kin."
