- Acting on an anonymous phone call, the police raid a house to arrest a suspected murderer. They don't know what he looks like but they know his name is John and that he is inside the house. The police bust in on a carpenter, a truck driver, a mechanic and a fireman all playing poker. Without hesitation or communication of any kind, they immediately arrest the fireman. How do they know they've got their man?
- Ask yes/no questions to try to guess the explanation.

- When you were a child, what did you want to do when you grew up? Why did you change your mind (if you changed)?

- p. 45 part 2 - Did you or someone you know want to do these things?
- part 3 - Which jobs do these words describe?
- part 4 - Discuss the answers with your partner.
- rewarding = the job feels like you are helping people or helping the world
- satisfying = the job makes you feel good about doing it well (if you like your job it is satisfying for you)
- safe = not dangerous
- secure = not likely to lose your job

- International Women’s Day - March 8
- ---
- part 2 - listen to the women talk about their plans and choose the correct information
- part 3 - listen again and correct the mistakes in the sentences
- 1 “this job”, not “home”
- 2 “next month”, not “tomorrow”
- 3 “business”, not “job”
- 4 “the bank manager”, not “her new boss”
- 5 “study” or “continue to study”, not “work”
- 6 “week”, not “month”
- ---
- Look at the script on p. 175 (Devi’s statement is at the top of the page) and find
- 1 Something Devi has already planned and arranged: I’m taking the entrance exam next month.
- 2 Something she has planned but hasn’t arranged: I’m not going to stay in this job forever.
- 3 Something she decides while she is speaking: I suppose I’ll tell him soon.
- ---
- Grammar for Decisions and Plans about the Future:
- present continuous = a plan that has already been decided and (at least partly) arranged
- [be] going to + base form = a plan, already decided, maybe arranged or maybe not
- will + base form = a decision made while speaking (as well as offers and promises)
- ---
- BREAK
- ---
- doppelganger: literally “double goer” in German, it’s a person who looks very similar to you (even if you’re not related or connected in any way)
- ---
- We can also use simple present for future events:
- I will meet with him tomorrow. = I just made this decision (for example I just noticed I won’t have time to meet with him today).
- I’m going to meet with him tomorrow. = I made this decision in the past.
- I’m meeting with him tomorrow. = I made this decision in the past and talked to him about it.
- I meet with him tomorrow. = This is a scheduled event. (Maybe because we meet every week, but not necessarily.)
- With simple present and present continuous, we need some additional information to know it’s about the future and not the present.
- ---
- I’m watching Netflix tonight. - This plan doesn’t need any additional arrangements, so it is the same meaning as, “I’m going to watch Netflix tonight.” Usually, if two sentences have the same meaning, we prefer to use the shorter one.
- ---
- (Predictions can use “will” or “going to” with very similar meaning. We will talk more about predictions tomorrow.)
- ---
- p. 49 part 8 - choose the correct options to complete the paragraph
- 1 I’m taking (If I left school last month, it might be summer now and this is about the present.)
- 2 I’m starting (If I know the date, this is a decision that was already made and arranged.)
- 3 I’m going to take (also already decided)
- 4 I’m going to manage (this is more of a prediction than a plan)
- 5 they are going to do (Without additional information, “what they are doing” has a present meaning.)
- 6 I’m going to be (prediction, not plan; also being a great mechanic isn’t an action -> no continuous)
- 7 I’ll have (prediction, and also less specific and less certain)
- Some of my friends don’t know what they’re doing. = right now
- Some of my friends don’t know what they’re doing next year. = arrangements for the future
- ---
- part 9 - write the most logical future form to complete these conversations
- 1 I’m taking / I’m going to take (if you can say both, choose the shorter one)
- 2 I’ll help
- 3 is getting married / (is going to get married)
- 4 I’m going / I’m going to go
- 5 I’ll open
- ---
- “Will” also indicates willingness (If I’m willing to do something, it means if you ask me I’ll say yes. It’s not as strong as wanting to do something.)
- “Won’t” can indicate unwillingness or refusal. “The window won’t open,” is not a prediction, it’s a statement that the window “refuses” or “doesn’t want” to open.
- ---
- p. 49 part 10 - put the words from the box into the correct sequence of educational events
- 1 pass the test / stay in school
- 2 get bad grades / fail a test/exam
- 3 take a training course
- 4 get a degree in (something)
- A degree is a certificate of graduation from a college or university program.
- Associate’s Degree - 2 years
- Bachelor’s Degree - 4 years
- Master’s Degree - 5-6 years
- Doctorate (PhD) - 7-8 years
- vocation = a job or profession that has training and apprenticeship instead of a college degree requirement
- We could say two basic education paths are academic and vocational.
- ---
- What are your educational plans for the next two years?
- ---
- An institution with “college” in the name probably doesn’t offer master’s or doctorate degrees.
- Within a university, words like “college”, “school”, “department” are used differently by different schools.
