And then Sergeant Ga snarled.

An actual snarl. Low and mean and feral, with no trace of humanity. It was a purely animal sound and yet filled with emotion. Not with hunger or even hate. This was a snarl of anger. Of meanness.

Of rage.

With no warning beyond that sound, the sergeant launched himself forward. His weapon was still in his hands, but Ga seemed to have forgotten about it. Or forgotten what it was. He crashed into Ryuk, bearing him backward and down. The officer fumbled for his gun, but lost it as strong white teeth clamped with crushing force around his windpipe. The world went black and red and full of stars that exploded and quickly faded to dying sparks.

His men did not rush to his aid. Not one of them tried to pull Sergeant Ga off of him, or attempted to stanch the blood that geysered up into the late-afternoon sunlight.
