- HEALING AFTER SEPARATION
- 15 July 2007: 4AA.
- Adoptees need it, too
- "They never forgot" (Source, July 8), about the 1.5 million unmarried and pregnant young women and girls forced to surrender their babies, is a story that long needed telling. All three of my children's birth mothers told me the same story when they reunited with their now-grown adult child whom they never forgot.
- But another story needs telling: the absolute frustration of living without knowing their birth mother and how hard it is for adoptees to search and reunite. Unlike stories of the agency reuniting birth mother and her adult child, this does not always happen. I work with the Minnesota Coalition for Adoption Reform to promote legislation so that adult adoptees at age 19 can get their original birth certificate and they too can begin the healing process.
