  1. STORY THEMES
  2. ------------
  3.
  4. Each character is broken in some way, that's important. I want short stories for
  5. each character that reflect their problems. They are forced to confront their
  6. weaknesses, reach their lowest point, and eventually come back stronger.
  7.
  8. Sabas
  9. -----
  10.
  11. Sabas is timid and afraid to take initiative. That's why he hasn't earned his
  12. Honor (graduation) at the Academy of Magic, despite completing his coursework.
  13. The headmaster doesn't think that Sabas is capable of surviving in the real
  14. world. Sabas needs to be forced to take initiative in order to save something he
  15. truly cares about.
  16.
  17. Sabas is also afraid of hurting people. In his heart, he is a healer. But all
  18. mages have access to two opposing domains of magic. In Sabas's case, these
  19. domains are Life and Death. He forces himself to never touch the death domain. I
  20. want to give him a reason to learn not to be afraid of Death. Maybe he has to
  21. end someone's suffering when there's nothing he can do to help them?
  22.
  23. Mezatrix
  24. --------
  25.
  26. Mezatrix is paranoid and self destructive. As a child, she was ostracized by
  27. her community because of her magical abilities. She grew to mistrust people,
  28. believing that they would always turn on her eventually. Life wasn't any better
  29. when she joined the Academy. Although she was now among fellow magic users, she
  30. couldn't bring herself to make friends. Whenever she began to get to know
  31. someone, a nagging fear of rejection would start building in the back of her
  32. mind. Eventually she would turn nasty in order to save herself from future
  33. betrayal.
  34.
  35. I want Mezatrix to learn that it's okay to rely on others. That they usually
  36. have your best interests at heart. That even if they're talking behind your
  37. back, they aren't automatically saying terrible things. Some sort of situation
  38. where the party must split up in order to accomplish a goal would be good here.
  39.
  40. Lana
  41. ----
  42.
  43. Lana feels a lot of guilt for the death of Taggart, her mentor. She's afraid
  44. that she's not strong, skilled, or clever enough to protect the things that are
  45. important to her. I think she needs an opportunity to prove that she really is
  46. good enough. And maybe she needs to learn that sometimes there's nothing you can
  47. do.
