  30. At first, Maya can't believe it. After all, the newspapers lie, don't they?
  31.
  32. But it's all too real?a picture of him being lead out of the courtroom is printed on the page, and the expression on his face breaks her heart.
  33.
  34. **Up-and-Coming Lawyer Forges Evidence
  35. **_Phoenix Wright presents forged evidence, stripped of his attorney badge._
  36.
  37. Phoenix doesn't even have the guts to tell her what's happened to her _face_, and Maya couldn't be more furious.
  38.
  39. She immediately catches the next train to the city and hops in a cab that takes her to the Wright and Co. Law Offices. Maya flies up the stairs and slams her fist on the door. "Nick! Open up!"
  40.
  41. There's no response.
  42.
  43. Maya pounds on the door angrily. "I know you're in there!"
  44.
  45. Still, there is only silence. And no matter how much she slams on the door, he never opens it or even acknowledges that she's there, and finally she slumps down in front of it and puts her head in her hands.

  49. She can't remember the last time she saw his face.
  50.
  51. It's been?what? Seven, eight years? That long since he lost his badge and cut off all ties with everybody relating to his past as a lawyer. Everybody who was ever involved with any of his cases couldn't contact him. There were no chance meetings, no articles about him in the newspapers, nothing at all. It was almost as though Phoenix Wright had completely disappeared from the world.
  52.
  53. Maya can hardly believe it when she sees his name printed in black and white on a newspaper that Pearl hands to her one day.
  54.
  55. **Fraudulent Lawyer Charged with Murder!
  56. **_Man murdered in underground room, Phoenix Wright suspected._
  57.
  58. Her vision blurs and her lips part as she stares down at the newspaper. She knows it isn't true, none of it?Nick would never have it in him to kill someone. She _knows_ Phoenix Wright, and he is not a murderer.
  59.
  60. But then again?does she really know anything about him now? He's probably changed. A lot. She knows she certainly has.
  61.
  62. The doubt ringing in her ears is what helps to make up her mind. Maya closes the newspaper determinedly and folds it up.
  63.
  64. The adventures that she and Phoenix shared are a lifetime away. He's probably found some girl, settled down, maybe had a kid. Who knows?
  65.
  66. He's moved on with his life, apparently, and now she has to move on with hers.
  67.

  70. It's a twist of fate that brings Maya to the bus station a few years later. She's thirty-two and doesn't have an umbrella. It's raining heavily and she's getting soaked.
  71.
  72. Maya runs towards the bus station, feeling sour and grumpy, when suddenly the rain above her head disappears. She looks up to see an umbrella, and turns to see some man holding the umbrella. He looks a few years older than herself and wears a blue beanie.
  73.
  74. She doesn't recognize him and is fairly sure she's never met him in her life, and so smiles at him. "Thank you."
  75.
  76. He smiles back. "It was no problem. You looked like you needed it." The man laughs a bit and the sound fills her with warmth for reasons unknown. Maya turns to the bus stop. "Thank you. Are you headed there, too?"
  77.
  78. "Yeah. I'm going to catch the bus back to my place."
  79.
  80. They begin to walk towards the bus stop and as soon as they get there, Maya's bus arrives. She gets on it and turns to smile at the man. "Well, goodbye."
  81.
  82. "Let me get your name, at least."
  83.
  84. "M?Maya Fey," she says quickly, as the doors begin to beep a warning. "It was nice to meet you." The doors slam shut right in front of her.
  85.
  86. As the bus trundles away, she turns away, and doesn't see the man drop his umbrella. She doesn't see him lean against the stop for support. She certainly doesn't see his hands begin to shake, and she doesn't see the tears that suddenly slide down his cheeks.
