- After Gawein's failure the messenger at once gave the tankard of claret to my lord Lanzelet of Arlac, who had two callings, for he was both a knight and a priest; from childhood on it had always been his task to interpret for the retinue whatever wondrous tales he read. He was the first among the knights and more renowned than all the others: his life had always _been devoted in every way to the pursuit of honor. He would joust or do battle with any knight on earth, however mighty. His strength was of such a nature that from midday on it constantly increased till into the night, and whoever fought with him then had no chance of victory.
