- Pokemon FRLG+ Ch'ding FAQ
- Q: What is this game?
- A: This is a ROM hack of FRLG created by Deokishisu which pretty much applies a lot of the speedchoice options, plus a few others!
- Q: How does it differ from vanilla?
- A: A fair amount. You get the running shoes immediately, can run indoors, the bike has two speeds (think a mix between the classic FRLG bike and the Mach bike, but with no acceleration). There are a few neat options you can set including instant text and instant HP bars, and you can also set the difficulty between Easy, Normal and Challenge Mode where trainer levels (and in the case of Challenge Mode, gym leader parties) are adjusted. EXP yield can be changed as well - normal (1x), half (0.5x), no EXP, or double (2x EXP). In addition, the second round of the Elite Four does not require catching any specfic # of Pokes, you just need to do the Sevii sidequests.
- For these runs, I'll be using Easy Mode with 2x EXP (for the most part!)
- Q: You're using Ch'ding??!
- A: Yep! Wanted to change things up since I'm happy with my times for the three starters. There is a Ch'ding (trade Farfetch'd) route for vanilla which I thought would be fun to route for this hack! We also recently added Alt Poke leaderboards on SRC (https://www.speedrun.com/pokemon_fireredleafgreen_plus#Alt_Main_Pokes) and Headbob ran both Primeape and Nidoking (both really cool runs!) so I decided to jump in on the fun :)
- Q: What Pokémon will you use?
- A: I'll start with Squirtle (manipped, loose IV requirements) and will be catching a Pidgey and/or Rattata on Route 1 (can catch Pidgey/Spearow later on Route 3, can catch Nidoran/Rattata/Sandshrew on Route 3/4 as backups) for Fly and Cut respectively. I'll be catching a Spearow to trade on Route 11 to do the trade.
- Q: How does this run differ from vanilla Ch'ding?
- A: The extra EXP (2x) makes things interesting! For one, I will not need to camp for a L17 Spearow - any level will do, so the encounter is much better at 35%. I won't fight any optionals with Ch'ding other than swap training on the swimmer in Misty's gym (ONLY if I caught a L13 Spearow - this is to hit L17 for Rival 3). The badge disobedience level thresholds come into play in this as well (specifically the L30 threshold for Erika), so I will change the EXP yield to 0x (yes, 0 experience!) for a short section in Rock Tunnel.
- Other than that, the double EXP lets Ch'ding stomp pretty easily. Feel free to ask questions in chat!
- Q: What is WR?
- A: 1:31:21. For Any%, WR is 1:17:28, by me, using Squirtle. Check it out here: https://youtu.be/4XGxH0ntzEE
- Q: How do times compare between all the mains so far?
- A: I've compiled a list here: https://pastebin.com/svghg0Hb
- Q: Goal time?
- A: Sub-1:30
- Q: Should people play this game?
- A: Hell yea! It's one of my favorite Pokémon ROM hacks and is a fantastic speedgame.
