  23. >"To be honest, I hadn't expected to run into you here."
  24. "No one ever expects to run into me, Dr. Wehr. And yet, here I am, willing to make a deal with you."
  25. >"Of course. You're always willing to make a deal. What's your offer today, then?"
  26. "Here's the current scenario: you've woken Atlantis. In a bit over an hour, the last bits of power the ZPMs here have will drain as a result, and the ocean will flood and drown the city. Without help of some sort, this situation will kill everyone aboard. Are you with me so far?"
  27. >"Go on."
  28. "A bit of sleight-of-hand and, look what we have here! A fully charged ZPM, that I will let you borrow. Moreover, it will even recharge the other ZPMs - give it a couple of years and they'll be fully charged. I'll not bother you with the science behind it, even the Ancients only speculated on such."
  29. >"What's your price?"
  30. "I wish to join the expedition as chief medical officer."
  31. >"That's it? You won't use the position to cut more 'deals', will you?"
  32. "Have I ever spoken an untruth or not kept to my word? And no, I'll not offer any deals in that position unless requested. Feel free to keep an eye on me, but no double-secret probation; I was a Ravenclaw, not a member of Animal House."
  33. >"... We will check out the situation. If it is as you say, then we have a deal. Beckett certainly won't be pleased..."
  34. "He can be as displeased as he likes, but this will prevent his death in a few years."
  35.
  36. It was, of course, exactly as I stated. And so, without any time travel shenanigans being necessary, adding a fully-charged ZPM to Atlantis fixed .. well, essentially everything, and I became second-in-command of the Atlantis expedition. Now, calling the expedition 'doomed' would be a little excessive, but ... well, my presence became known as something of a bad omen among the more superstitious people of the galaxy. And, of course, something to do with Atlantis' abrupt activation seemed to wake up the Wraith - a vampire by any other name, I suppose, but still frustrating.
  37.
  38. On the plus side, many of the locals were willing to do anything, up to and including signing over their planets to me, to keep them safe from the Wraith. And so planets from this galaxy joined those from the Milky Way in their places on the inner surface of the dyson sphere. Opportunity is where you find it, and if you can keep things from killing you and causing collateral damage all the better.
  39.
  40. But... that still left a great many issues, of course. Such as the Wraith threat itself. If only the tau'ri had some sort of alliance with a civilization that had cut a deal with an outside force that cured their genetic problems and helped them deal with a nanite plague- oh wait, here come those wacky Asgardians, of course! I'm sure Loki will have an absolute ball studying the Wraith, and oh wait someone seems to have somehow accidentally infected some of their food with something that causes them to revert to being human once more, isn't that such a shame.
