  20. —personality description: Jihyun desires perfection. She’s always worrying about how people will respond to anything she says or does if it’s not perfect. She’ll spend hours doing the same thing over and over and over again until she’s satisfied with the outcome, because she can never bring herself to share something with someone unless she is happy with the outcome. She also has a fear of finality. To her, when something is final, it can never be fixed, no matter how many little mistakes are found. Because of this, she always has a bit of anxiety before going up and doing a performance, because it’s a one and done kind of thing. If she messes up there and then, there’s no going back.
  21.     She’s a very introverted person. No matter how critical of herself she is, she always feels safer being alone with her own mind. Other people are unpredictable, and she feels as though she always needs to be perfect around them. She doesn’t know how they see “perfection,” either, so she worries that she needs to meet both her own and their standards of “perfect.” So, she tends to simply not talk. Not talking doesn’t give her a lot of attention, and she has no chance of saying the wrong thing. When she does decide to talk, she thinks about what she’s going to say over and over, making sure that it sounds right, that it fits the context, that she’s going to use the right tones she needs to in order to get her point across. Occasionally, she’ll mouth the words out before actually saying what she wants to. Both a good thing and a bad thing in her mind, is that this level of preparation she likes to have before speaking often means that she misses the chance to actually come out and say what she wants to. By the time she feels comfortable with saying what she wanted to say, the conversation would have already moved on.
  22.     She’s really insecure, and has trouble accepting compliments. Whenever someone compliments her, sure, she’ll feel good about what it was they were talking to her about, but then she’ll realize all of the stuff they didn’t mention, and start trying to figure out where she messed up there. For example, if someone comments on how well she did the point move in a dance, she’ll start wondering why no one mentioned her rapping or her solo dance part or her center moment or…
  23.     She’s always comparing herself to others. This isn’t because she’s trying to make herself feel better or trying to make sure that she’s better than anyone, but because she uses the success of others to show her what she needs to do and where she is lacking. (Although, the one good aspect of her comparing herself to others, means that she’s paid attention to what they were doing in detail, and can give really, really thorough feedback and compliments). There are times when Jihyun just needs some kind of verbal smack in the face for her to realize that she’s talented and can allow herself the chance to rest every once in awhile. No sugarcoating anything, just the harsh truth of, “Yeah, there’s going to be times when you mess up, but look at how far you’ve come with this and at how good you are with this.” Despite this, talking in this way isn’t always good for her. Usually, she needs to be spoken to softly, because she listens and analyzes tone a lot. If someone speaks to her a bit too sharply or loudly, she’ll begin to think about every conversation they’ve had, mentally cataloging anything and everything she could have done wrong to or while around them.
  24.     Even though she’s very shy and introverted, she absolutely loves being onstage. When she’s up on stage, she’s confident, and she can truly saw that she’s proud of herself. Afterwards, her opinions on her performance may change, but not until long after she has come off of the adrenaline high. She knows that she needs to act like a professional while on stage, and she is able to clear her mind, and silence all of her worried and stressed-out thoughts, and just think about what she has to do right in that moment. This kind of clear headedness doesn’t come to her all of the time when she’s dancing or rapping. There’s a clear separation of what is practice and what is performance, in her mind. Along with her mindset of professionality, she can get very competitive, if she feels it’s necessary. She’s not a naturally argumentative or competitive person, as she’d much rather avoid confrontation. But, when she’s competing for, say, a slot in a girl group or on a reality show or as a representative of Mars, she’ll do everything she can to win. And, in these types of circumstances, it is her trying to win, not only her trying to do and be the best.
  25.     Jihyun cares for the members of her group a lot, and she has an unwavering loyalty towards them. It doesn’t come easily to her to make friends, and she never really had any until she was put into Mars, and she quickly discovered how much she loved having people there for her who weren’t her parents. She would do almost anything for them. [[oh my gof, Nyx needs to sabotage someone. Like, she needs to reach a point where stuff isn’t looking good for Mars, and they’re desperate, and she needs to kind of break and sabotage another team because, honestly, who would suspect her? Who even really remembers she’s there?]]
  26.
  27. —birthplace: Auckland, New Zealand
  28. —hometown: Auckland, New Zealand ; Incheon, South Korea
  29.
  30. —background: Growing up in New Zealand, Jihyun never really had any friends. Sure, she talked to a handful of people occasionally, but she wasn’t the kind of person to spend all weekend at a friend’s house or take hours out of her day just being on the phone with one of her friends, talking about anything and everything. She would spend her time reading books, hiking, swimming, listening to music, etc. When it came to school, she would always strive to be the best. Although this wasn’t because she wanted to be better than anyone (anyone aside from herself, that is), it tended to spark competition between some of her other classmates, who often felt like she was just trying to prove them to be stupid. Naturally, this didn’t help her in the social department, but, at this time, she didn’t particularly care. It wasn’t until she was put into Mars, actually, that she ever had a true experience of friendship, and realized how much she would have preferred having this while she was growing up.
  31.     She was twelve when she first got interested in dancing. Her parents immediately put her into lessons, thinking it would help her to make friends. Although they’re both fairly quiet people themselves, they were worried for their daughter. At the time, it didn’t do anything to help her make friends. If anything, it cut more into the time she would have to go out and do things, because she would spend so much time dancing. She would always be found on the back deck of their house, overlooking the lake they lived next to, just practicing her dances with the screen door as her mirror.
  32.     She discovered rapping when she was fourteen. Because she didn’t have an actual rap teacher, she took it upon herself to learn how to rap and how to rap well. She listened to rap songs and would try to copy them. She would spend her time after school looking up how-tos and tutorials online.
  33.     When Jihyun was sixteen, her parents and her decided to move to South Korea, back to her father’s family. He had always had a dream of opening a restaurant in Korea (mostly because Korean food wasn’t that popular in New Zealand, at the time), and the only things holding them there were her mother’s family and the scenery. So, for the next year, they began preparing for it. Finding an apartment they liked in Korea, a space for her father to rent out for a restaurant, learning (or relearning) the language. By seventeen, they were officially Korean residents.
  34.     She was immediately surprised by the level of schooling in South Korea, even at the international school she went to. Nevertheless, it was still her desire to do the best, and that wasn’t about to change. It just meant that much more of her time was taken up by school, which pushed her times to practice dancing and rapping later and later into the night. She couldn’t bring herself to drop them entirely. One she sets her mind to something, she can’t just give it up entirely, especially not something she loved so much.
  35.     While in Korea, her mother would still make her model for her, and it was mostly pictures of Jihyun that she used to get her name out there. She eventually managed to break into the circle of photographers who would do photoshoots for entertainment companies. Before she got as large of a crew to help her out as she has now, she would make Jihyun come along to assist her. This was one of the first times Jihyun was exposed to kpop and to the life of idols.
  36.     Shortly after she turned eighteen, she started to work a few gigs as an underground rapper. It was during one of these performances that she was first scouted by Stardom, who had an agent in the crowd, looking for new talent. At first, she was someone hesitant to accept the scout’s offer to come audition, but she came to realize that taking this offer would be the best decision if she ever wanted to keep dancing and rapping and have more time to develop her skill.

  50. ° taking pictures > she picked this hobby up from her mom, who would often drag her away from whatever she was doing to go out and take pictures of the scenery of New Zealand (because it’s fucking beautiful and I really want to go visit my relatives just to see it in person) ; she would always be able to forget about whatever she was stressing about, and lose herself in the beauty of the pictures
  51. ° reading > whenever she finds the time, she loves being able to get lost in some other world in some other person’s shoes with some other person’s problems
  52.
  53. —likes:
  54.     ° being onstage/performing > it shuts up her mind

  68. ° wasting time > (see above)
  69. ° being around people when she’s trying something new > she’d feel much more comfortable having time to practice and get most of her mistakes fixed while she was alone
  70.
  71. —talents/trivia:
  72.     ° Jihyun does her best work at night > most people are asleep during the time she’s most productive, so she feels safer to be able to just work, since there’s few view people who could walk in on her messing up
  73.     ° she’s a night owl > she loves the quiet, settling down feeling of the night, because it relaxed her ; although she can and does wake up early with very little issues, she likes it less, because she feels like there’s more anxiety of “I have to do this and this and this today”
  74.     ° Jihyun’s parents support her being an idol very much and love that she’s having to go out of her comfort zone and spend more time with people > despite this, their first words when she told them she was going to audition for Stardom were “Wait, if you’re leaving, who’s going to model for me?” and “Yeah, who’s gonna try my new recipes to make sure they’re actually edible?” (they said this to make her feel more comfortable about going and to make the situation more light-hearted, because they knew it would be stressful for her)
  75.     ° Jihyun’s preferred outfit is usually ripped skinny jeans, dark boots, and her leather jacket > her mom always felt this style fit her best, so she would tell Jihyun to wear this whenever she was modelling for her, and Jihyun just naturally came to be comfortable in it
  76.     ° Jihyun’s New Zealand accent (that’s always apparent when she speaks English) always gets confused for Australian (the same thing happens to my mom, and she hates it. Whenever people comment on her accent, she likes to make them guess, and it’s funny to watch)
  77.     ° she really wanted to go to Seoul Performing Arts, but her Korean wasn’t good enough when they moved, and her father had already had his restaurant opened by the time she could speak it fluently enough to get by (yes, I included this, deal with it)
  78. ° she modeled for Stardom a bit before debut > they almost debuted her as a model, actually, but then they realized that Mars was going to need some new members to give them more of a chance to survive in the shark tank that is kpop

  80. < ALLSTARS - MEMBER PROFILE >
  81.
  82. —stage name: Nyx > Nyx is the Greek goddess of the night, and Jihyun is a night owl who has always loved Greek mythology
  83. —stage persona: pow-er-ful. Being on stage and performing is the only time she’s able to clear her head of any of her worries, to focus on what she’s doing, and to have fun and be proud with all that she’s done to get there. She knows how to put on a show and draw attention to her skills when she steps up on that stage. And, the moment she steps off of it, she disappears right back into the shadows, out of sight, out of mind.
  84.
  85. —audition song and dance:
  86. ° dance: Mirotic by DBSK/TVXQ
  87. ° rap: The Baddest Female by CL
  88. ° (“Dope by BTS” — what the fuck were you thinking, younger me? Dope came out in late June 2015. Nyx joined Mars in late September 2015. In other words, she would have had three months to learn the dance, audition, AND be accepted into Mars. Yep. You chose a great form, AJ.)
  89. —why did you choose the company you're at? Stardom scouted her first, so she just went with them. Although she had been dreaming about being an idol, she had been worried that she wouldn’t be good enough to get in. Because Stardom approached her, she felt like, because she had enough talent to catch their attention, she had a chance.

  96.     ° there being some kind of photoshoot, and Jihyun’s mom being one of the photographers
