Following the success of Vocaloids and similar software along with Japan's growing obsession with holograms and hardlight technology, the small-but-capable Kanade Corporation had set out to become the next big name in both. After a few years of R&D and struggling with dead-ends and technological limitations, an epiphany that on examination would be considered far too good to be true came over the research team and a working prototype of both the hardware and software was finalized. For its debut performance, the design team created the virtual idol character Koaku Mao, playing off the eerily magical quality of the impressive technology as a thematic point, and creating her as a cutesy, mischievous demon girl that would be 'summoned' by the power of the holographic projector.

This would turn out to be truer than they all expected.

As it would turn out, the company's grounds was under the influence of a weak but crafty Emulator's Lunar Casket, slowly working on pushing its way out into the real world. Unable to do this on its own, it instead turned to guiding the employees towards summoning it, and it used their project as the medium. However, while the beginnings of this efforts would prove successful, it ultimately would be thwarted by a group of Wizards who had tracked down the anomalous equipment. They were unable to completely stop the summoning itself, and instead made an attempt to pre-empt it by loading Mao's data into it first, giving her time to fight it off inside the Lunar Casket. This data combined with the magic powered by the Emulator's Lunar Casket had the bizarre side-effect of bringing Mao to life.

As a being made of data and magic from a Lunar Casket, she came to possess a strange ability to 'hack' the world around her in a limited way, projecting barriers made out of the same magical hardlight hologram as her own body, as well as possessing an almost spiritual connection to technology. By the time she had truly come to, however, the employees of Kanade Corp, the Emulator, and the Wizard that were responsible for her 'birth' had disappeared.

For the longest time after that, Mao had spent most of her time on the net, establishing a large fanbase for herself as a 'fictional' net idol, but as the days went by and her treks through the web had found her in more magical avenues, she found herself becoming more curious of her own existence, and more lonely. She has since set out looking for the people responsible for her birth, which has currently taken her to America.
