- Tap, tap, tap. Daniel Galloway was just finishing tossing some sticks on his dinky fire, as it would probably be cold tonight. Daniel Galloway brushed his sandy brown hair out of his face. He was young, probably a preteen judging by his weight and height. He peered over to his home through a locked window to see his father clutching a beer shouting at the television. Daniel solemnly stared at the slowly frosting window. Suddenly he was disturbed from his trance by a rustle in the bushes.
- Daniel stammered back and looked to see a raven, its cold black eyes peering up at him. He looked back up at the window to see his father glance towards him, and recalled a time when his father had beaten in a possum’s skull with a golf club. As he turned around he was just able to see the raven fly away.
- Daniel stared at the spot where it stood with a look that is only to be described as hopelessness, and sat down by his fire.
- A few hours later of idly laying by the fire, his stomach growled menacingly. He got up, absorbed in thought about a great feast he may have some future day. When he stretched, he stopped half way and double took on a bush nearby. Out of the bush rustled the same raven as before, oddly enough.
- Trying to spare the creature from his father’s wrath, he flicked his hands out saying “Get, get!” But the Raven stared idly back him. When he gave up, the raven placed a small piece of meat at his feet, and hopped towards him and rubbed his leg like a cat may have.
- As desperate as a teenage girl for attention, he gently stroked its head. He walked over to the bush, plucked a stick off, and cooked the meat over the fire with it. Him and the raven had a hearty meal considering the circumstances, and afterwards he tried to shoo it away once again, this time with despair in his eyes.
- Eventually the raven flew up into a tree, and Daniel decided to pack up his things and get into his hammock. He didn’t have a blanket, and sat there clutching himself and shaking.
- Suddenly the raven dropped back into his lap, this time with some blades of grass in its mouth. “Trying to make me a nest, huh?” Daniel said with a chuckle, then wrapped his arm around the bird and tried to get some sleep.
