- This week: opinion essay (persuasive essay)
- ---
- Handout p. 165
- How should schools punish cheaters?
- plagiarism = a type of cheating where you use someone else’s work as your own (e.g. copying text for your own writing)
- In many universities, you can be kicked out of the school if you plagiarize someone else’s work.

- p. 165-6 - Read the blog post about this topic.
- Is the punishment (removing him from the class after one time cheating on homework) too harsh? Think of three possible reasons for each answer.
- Yes, it is too harsh:
- - All students are under a lot of pressure to do well.
- - The student’s whole academic life is hurt.
- - It removes the student’s right to study in that class.
- - The school’s rule and the teacher’s rule are different.
- - The student could lose his skills if he can’t take the class.
- - The student only cheated once on homework. Not a test or a final paper.
- No, it is not too harsh (it’s an appropriate punishment):
- - Students need consequences for that behavior.
- - He and his parents knew the consequences for cheating.
- - Punishment after one time prevents students from cheating repeatedly.
- - All students must study.
- - It’s unfair to other students if this one is permitted to cheat.
- What is your personal opinion?
