  1. "Maternity"

  5. >It wasn't abundantly clear what had caused Jasper to begin lactating. Such behavior was unprecedented in gems.
  6. >Her newfound maternal love of Steven seemed to have triggered it, but why it was happening to begin with remained a mystery.
  7. >The only certain fact was that Stephen was fond of Jasper and her crystalline milk, which he enthusiastically sucked down when Pearl wasn't watching.
  8. >Today they were doing just that, with Jasper seated on the couch and Stephen sitting on her knee. Her left breast was exposed, a plump orange mass that Stephen gently suckled from with his eyes closed. Jasper held the boy close, occasionally running her fingers through his curly black hair. She smiled contentedly and had her attention fixed on his chubby, milk-speckled face.
  9. >Peridot sat across from them, observing Stephen. Pearl had thus far failed to produce an explanation for why this was happening. The others were out that day and Peridot was determined to solve the mystery before they returned.
  10. >"This is illogical," Peridot said with an exasperated sigh. "There's no known model for what's going on here."
  11. >"What's it matter?" Jasper asked. "He's a growing boy. He needs nourishing if he's going to be a powerful warrior one day. I'm happy that I can give him that. Plus it makes him happy."
  12. >"I have to be right about this!" Peridot exclaimed. "Pearl is always the one who's right. For once she doesn't have an answer. This is my time to shine!"
  13. >Jasper poked Steven's cheek, letting off an affectionate giggle as she did so.
  14. >"And that's another thing," Peridot said. "You love war. You were made to end lives. Being compassionate isn't in your programming. Where is all this nurturing coming from? Why the sudden love?"
  15.

  17. >"I couldn't tell you. It's something I never thought I'd enjoy at first. I also didn't know Steven in the past. I can see now that he's a wonderful child. He's just so cute and small. I want to be there for him, to keep him safe."
  18. >"Okay, but what does he see in it? He gets so excited about drinking that stuff and then he nearly falls asleep. It's like he doesn't even know the outside world exists. Steven, if you're not an unconscious clod, than do some vocalization! Say something!"
  19. >Steven continued suckling, impervious to Peridot's pestering. Peridot rested her face in the palm of her hand.
  20. >Jasper laughed. "Why don't you give it a try?" she queried, clutching her right breast through her jumper. "It's not like you're that much bigger than he is."
  21. >Peridot was taken aback at the suggestion, blushing deeply.
  22. >"No, I need to be an impartial observer," Peridot stammered. "It wouldn't be appropriate to, er, partake."
  23. >"Don't be so uptight," Jasper responded. "If you got a taste, it might help you figure this out. Plus I'm making way too much of this stuff, more than Steven can drink. I'm thrilled to be doing this, but my chest is always so damn sore."
  24. >Peridot wrung her fingers together. She kept her eyes on her feet.
  25. >"You wouldn't mind?" Peridot asked. Jasper shook her head.
  26. >"Well... when you put it like that, I guess I could give it a try."
  27.

  29. >"So I just...?" Peridot asked, her tiny green hands pressed into Jasper's swollen breast.
  30. >"Right, with your mouth," Jasper said, motioning towards her bright red areola. A trickle of milk leaked from the center. Peridot just now noticed that the milk glittered faintly.
  31. >Peridot glanced over at Stephen. He continued with his suckling, his throat bulging with each mouthful he swallowed. Peridot let out a nervous sigh, closed her eyes, and descended on the breast.
  32. >Once she'd taken the nipple in her widened mouth, Peridot's eyes nervously darted back and forth. Jasper peered down at her, smiling. Peridot felt smaller than usual. A deeper shade of red spread across her face.
  33. >Jasper laughed softly, her massive chest rising with each chuckle. She gathered the little gem in her arms and pulled her close.
  34. >"You're real cute sometimes," she said, stroking Peridot's cheek with an outstretched hand.
  35. >Peridot felt the warm milk dripping into her mouth. She instinctively began to suck on the teat. More milk splashed into her mouth. It was rich and creamy. Food and drink normally didn't interest Peridot, but this taste made her want more. She felt the warm liquid descend down her gullet and begin to pool in her stomach.
  36. >"You've got it now," Jasper whispered, rustling her fingers through Peridot's pale blond hair.
  37. >Hearing that gave Peridot immense satisfaction, as though everything was going according to some unseen plan. She wasn't sure if she was getting closer to the truth or not. The outcome of the investigation didn't seem nearly as important now. Usually her mind was abuzz with nervous energy, but it had now become oddly still. What mattered the most was that she keep sucking.

  40. >As if on cue, a brilliant warmth spread across her entire body. Her fingertips and toes began to tingle, as did the nerves in her face. She was surprised at how light-headed and foggy the milk was making her feel. The feeling was so sudden and overwhelming that tears began to well in her eyes. The rush of emotion was too much for her to process. Tears streamed down her face, moistening Jasper's supple orange skin.
  41. >"Is something wrong?" Jasper asked with a compassionate look in her eyes. "Do you want to stop?"
  42. >The colors in Jasper's broad face had become deep and vibrant. The luscious tones of orange and red were like a sunset in the evening sky.
  43. >Peridot shook her head, her mouth firmly latched onto the teat. She couldn't recall anyone ever speaking to her with genuine concern like that. It was imperative that she keep drinking.
  44. >"Don't worry about a thing," Jasper cooed, using her thumb to wipe away the tiny gem's tears. "Everything's just fine. You're safe here. Nothing bad'll happen on my watch."
  45. >As she guzzled down more and more milk, Peridot realized she'd never felt such intense euphoria before. This kind of intimacy was unheard of where she came from. For the type of gem she was, there could be no such thing as passion. Her entire life had been spent going through the motions. As a technician, she'd been more like an intelligent piece of industrial machinery than a sentient being. In that present moment, she was truly alive.
  46. >The rest of the world fell away. Her, Jasper, and Steven were all that there was in existence. Jasper became like a primordial god from a time before men, before even the diamonds. Her eyes were like the sky and her body was the earth. Peridot was completely hers. Her petty worries and fears had all melted away. So long as she was curled up in the embrace of these big orange arms, everything would be alright. Jasper would nourish her. Jasper would keep her safe. Jasper would love her as one of her own.

  49. >Peridot had at last drunk her fill. She swallowed one last mouthful of the life-giving milk and then pulled away from the teat. She slumped against Jasper's chest, her eyes half-open and her face all red. Iridescent milk dribbled down her chin. She felt as though she could dream for a thousand years.
  50. >"Tired?" a voice echoed from some distant place. Peridot hazily looked up to see Jasper's sparkling, beaming visage. Her yellow eyes shone as brightly as Capella and Menkalinan in the night sky. Peridot weakly nodded, her cheek barely lifting from Jasper's breast. Jasper smiled.
  51. >"Just close your eyes," Jasper murmured, gently rocking Peridot in her arm. "Close your eyes and focus on my voice."
  52. >Peridot complied. Her breathing began to slow. Jasper slowly rubbed the small gem's back.
  53. >"You're all tuckered out, just like Steven. I'll be here when you go to sleep. I'll be here when you wake up."
  54. >In her deep slumber, Peridot dreamt for the first time in her life. She recalled the blue glimmer of the Pleiades, which she'd spotted from the observation deck during her initial voyage to earth. She inhaled and the cosmos swelled around her. She was everywhere at once and no where at all. She felt as light as a breath of air.
  55. >She opened her eyes and saw that she was standing upon a vast tundra beneath a swirling grey canvas of clouds. She saw an immense orange auroch looming over the landscape. Its hide was speckled with the stars of the night sky. A pink, primeval human laid beneath it, suckling from its distended udder.
  56. >The clouds parted and in brilliant flash of daylight, a yellow hand bore down from the heavens. It was contorted into a fist and in this Peridot sensed malicious intent. She dove beneath the auroch for cover, feeling in her heart that the hand would be unable to reach her there. Instead of the usual sense of looming catastrophe she lived with, everything here was endlessly tranquil. Even the greatest disturbance in the cosmos would have been unable to break her spirit.
  57. >"That isn't feasible," a shrill, feminine voice called down from the above. "It could only happen if you consciously willed it!"
  58.

  60. >Peridot opened her eyes. The pastel posters of Steven's room greeted her. Someone had stowed her away beneath the sheets of Steven's bed.
  61. >"Maybe it was subconscious," a drier, reserved voice chimed in. "Some part of your mind wanted you to be more maternal to Steven."
  62. >Peridot poked her head out of the sheets. Pearl, Garnet, and Jasper were milling about the kitchen downstairs.
  63. >"Whatever the case is, you shouldn't be feeding him like this," Pearl said, her arms crossed. "It's not proper for a human of his age! Besides, he has enough mother figures in his life already. He doesn't need another one besides me. And, uh, Garnet."
  64. >"If he enjoys it and it isn't hurting him, then what's the problem?" Jasper asked. "Besides, it's good for his bones. It'll help him be the best warrior he can be when he's older."
  65. >"Humans do require calcium," Garnet intoned. "I don't see any immediate complications that could arise from this."
  66. >"This is ridiculous!" Pearl said flusteredly. "We're talking about breastfeeding a teenager! This is not just implausible, but highly inappropriate."
  67. >Peridot retreated back into the sheets. She exhaled and closed her eyes again. Steven rolled over in bed and opened his eyes.
  68. >"Hey Peridot!" he exclaimed. "Were you having a nap too?"
  69. >Peridot jolted. She hadn't noticed Steven's presence.
  70. >"Uh, yeah," she replied. "Something like that."
  71. >"Jasper's milk makes me real tired too. It tastes good though, doesn't it?"
  72. >Peridot regarded the boy silently. She first felt embarrassed and then perplexed that Steven had figured all this out.
  73. >"Well, I'll quit bugging you," he said, climbing out of bed. "I've got places to be!"
  74. >Stephen descended the stairs, whistling the theme to that breakfast friends show he liked.
  75. >Peridot laid back and looked at the ceiling. A sour milky aftertaste lingered in the back of her throat. She wasn't any closer to the truth, but that was alright. For now she wanted to enjoy the present peace.
