  1. The Valatul are counted among the most anomalous species encountered by the Vigil. They are considered an energy-based lifeform for their unique reliance upon psionic energy, beyond that of any other known species.
  2.
  3. A Valatul's body consists of a swirling mass of psionic energy, usually manifesting as a glowing blue mist. This mist encases a skeleton-like framework of telekinetically controlled bones. Those bones consist of a dense outer shell with a 'marrow' of incredibly psionically conductive organic material. They are usually reinforced by metal. Primitive Valatul reinforced it with iron or other naturally occuring metals, but today's Valatul can increase their density with alloy metals like steel.
  4.
  5. Each bone must be connected to another, as they conduct the psionic energy which allows their body to move. If a bone is damaged enough to render its conductivity null, all connected bones will fall away as well, allowing for limbs to be severed as they would be with a normal, organic being.
  6.
  7. The structure and shape of the Valatul varies, but two things are consistent. An orb of this bony mass contains their brain. A second, slightly smaller orb is beneath this, containing a psionic core - psionically conductive material which is used to maintain the Valatul's 'digestive system'.
  8.
  9. The second orb can split open to reveal the core, usually when the Valatul desires to consume something. The core's energy tears apart any mass within the orb and can then incorporate it into the body. Biological mass can be used to create more bony material, create new brain mass, or fuel their energy production.
  10.
  11. Other material can be incorporated into the structure to reinforce it. It is possible for a Valatul to manufacture a new 'bone', a new piece of its structure. This gets more difficult as the Valatul grows larger, up until a point where it can no longer produce new bones as their autotelekinesis can no longer support them.
  12.
  13. The actual structure of the Valatul tends towards a bulky, humanoid skeleton-like appearance with the brain's shell where a head might be and the core in their chest. This is mainly due to social influence from other humanoid beings, and they can take on other, more varied forms depending on what species they spend the most time around during their formative years. For individuality's sake, many Valatul use their psionics to carve patterns into their frame, or style it subtly.
  14.
  15. Their body relies on autotelekinesis to maneuver. The swirling mist is the field of psionic influence which contains their bones and moves them in tandem, almost like a true organic body might. They use telepathy to communicate and psiolocation, the use of psionic energy to interpret their surroundings, to see and hear.
  16.
  17. They also have a few means of defending themselves. The most prominent is a 'core blast', a dangerous beam of psionic energy originating from an open core. These beams can vaporize organic matter. They additionally have telekinesis which can be deadly at times. Valatul, though slightly more frail than one might expect, can move very, very quickly and have a more flexible form they can use to avoid damage.
  18.
  19. They reproduce by producing a new brain and core with sufficient amounts of organic matter, and then effectively 'splitting' into another being. Hence, they are considered to reproduce asexually. Valatul, additionally, do not age in any real way aside from mental maturation and the 'filling out' of their form to its full capacity.
