- part B - Read the introductory paragraph about Athenian democracy. Then answer the questions.
- 1 A (Right now you should guess that the lecture is going to talk about problems with it.)
- 2 We expect to read about two ways that Athenian democracy helped Greece. (On the TOEFL, it would be three ways.)
- ---
- p. 118 part A - Without listening, what do you think the main point of the lecture will be? - B
- (The most common relationship between the lecture and the reading is contrast.)
- part B - Read the full passage and take notes on the key points. (You will have 3 minutes on TOEFL.)
- - It let all adults have a voice in the government, so all of them felt like they had power.
- - People were able to vote on everything, so every new law was good for most citizens.
- Now listen to the lecture and complete the notes about the main points.
- * Not all people were allowed to vote on all laws.
- - There were certain clauses that made people unable to vote.
- - If you lived near the city walls, you couldn’t vote about war.
- * It is not a good thing to have people vote on everything.
- - It meant that people have to vote on useless things.
- - It is better to have a government handle small laws.
- ---
- p. 119 part C - Typical writing prompt for the integrated task.
- Almost every TOEFL will have basically this prompt:
- “Summarize the main points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they _______ the points from the reading passage.”
- (If you only mention points from the reading, your score will be (at best) 1 out of 5.)
- ---
- part D - Complete the sample response with the correct phrases from the box.
- The reading says that Athenian Democracy was good for the people of Greece. The author gives two reasons for believing this. First, it let all adults have a voice in the government. In addition, people were able to vote on everything.
- The lecture says that this was not good for the people. First, not all people were allowed to vote on all of the laws. There were certain clauses that made some people unable to vote. For example, people who lived close to the city walls couldn’t vote on things having to do with war. [This contradicts the point in the reading that every adult had a voice.] Second, it isn’t a good thing to have people vote on everything. It meant that people had to vote even on useless things. It is better to have the government do that for the people. [This contradicts the point in the reading that it’s good to vote on everything.]
- ---
- ETS 1 test 5 - Read the passage. What is the main topic? What is the main idea about this topic? What are the three supporting points?
- Listen to the lecture. What does the speaker say about safety, speed, and expense?
- safety - accidents may be worse because more cars are driving faster
- speed - more people will have cars, so traffic problems won’t improve
- expense - computer and other equipment are very expensive
