  1. Stolen from somewhere on reddit. This was referring to them rationalizing the usage of things like telephones and computers and in some cases modern medicine.
  2.
  3. They are masters of rationalization.
  4.
  5. That's an unfair characterization if ever I saw one.
  6. They never started out saying "technology is the devil" or any of the dumb shit that some apparently think. However, they have noted how often technology destroys communities. So they're careful about which they permit and which they do not.
  7. Generally speaking, anything that makes a person rely on the outside world is looked down upon. So the power lines to your house aren't good, even though there's nothing wrong with electricity (this is why generators are ok, and here lately, solar panels). Also, anything that fosters connections to the outside world at the expense of those internal to the community... an internet connection would be much more worrisome to them than the computer that goes with it. Telephones they don't tend to mind using when it's for business purposes.
  8. This isn't rationalization, because they didn't make up some rules and then bend them because they wanted toys. This is a careful evaluation of what works for them and what doesn't.
  9.
  10. This.
  11. They're all about a self-reliant way of life. That's where the least complications come about as well as the most responsibility. That said, Amish are some of the most responsible people I've ever seen. Great folks, even if they seem bizarre to outsiders.
  12. I lived literally just outside of an Amish community growing up, old world Amish. They were wary of us, but they warmed up when they realized we were good folk, not going to tempt them to things they view as bad.
