- “Sentinels, detain them!” Taforne ordered.
- But the gunmen had ideas of their own and began opening fire on the mutants. “No!” came a cry from the ground. It was the mutant called Quicksilver, who suddenly appeared on the scene with his superhuman speed. Racing past the gunmen, he knocked the weapons from their hands before they could react.
- But there were other gunmen lying in wait, snipers that now cut loose from upper windows. Quicksilver had to dodge and swerve, a hail of bullets blocking his path to the mutants, who now fled in several directions, being pursued variously by Sentinels or gangsters. “Taforne,” Quicksilver called in his rapid-fire voice, “do not allow those mutants to be killed! They cannot all be Chlorites!”
- Neither can I risk allowing a Chlorite to escape in order to protect a few individual lives, Taforne thought. Nonetheless, he spoke to assuage the mutant’s concerns. “The Sentinels are programmed to detain them alive. They will do—”
- Quicksilver interrupted. “You expect me to trust them?” “I expect you to do your job and assist in detaining the mutants!”
- The conflict on the ground continued, and Quicksilver seemed to make little effort to obey Taforne’s order. Instead, he continued his efforts to disarm the gunmen or to remove mutants from their line of fire without subsequently ensuring their detention. Only the Sentinels on the scene were managing to do their duty, though there were only two. The rest, and the Imperial Guardsmen, were occupied elsewhere in the city.
