  1. AIM
  2. The purpose of this session is to give you the fundamental skills to set up and shoot using a DSLR
  3.
  4. PHOTOGRAPHY 101
  5. Photography is a skill that you should work at/ borrow cameras from the college and practice.
  6. Lesson Objectives
  7. 1. Understand how to critique photographs by applying the following terms:
  8. Composition
  9. Golden Ratio
  10. Rule of Thirds
  11. 2. Demonstrate an application of how technical information can help your photography:
  12. Aperture
  13. Shutter Speed
  14.
  15. A key term in Media, and Photography in particular, is 'Composition'
  16. What does it mean?
  17. 1. Composition is how the a picture is constructed
  18. 2. There is a subject
  19.
  20. Rules of thirds
  21. 1. Rules of thirds is a basic way of framing a shot.
  22. 2. It places the subject on one of the vertical or horizontal lines as the eye is naturally drawn to it.
  23. 3. This is show on the image opposite
  24.
  25. Cinematographers are in charge of Light and Cameras on film sets.
  26. Great Cinematographers frame each of their shots with photographic composition.
  27.
  28. ACTIVITY
  29. Frame and photograph a subject using the rule of thirds
  30.
  31. NEUTRAL SPACE
  32. When using the rule of thirds you may leave a large empty space or 'neutral space' in the frame.
  33. This can be balanced by including other objects in the frame
  34.
  35. ACTIVITY
  36. Photograph a composition using neutral space
  37.
  38. GOLDEN RATIO IN COMPOSITION
  39. The golden ratio is a spiral based on the mathematical pattern of Fibonacci sequence
  40. It puts the point of interest in the centre and as the spiral curves out other items feature along it's continuous line
  41. Throughout our culture this has been recognised as aesthetically pleasing.
  42. [Aesthetics - the nature/ study of beauty]
  43.
  44. It is sometimes stated that galaxies, shells, and subsequently paintings and architecture exhibit this pattern.
  45.
  46. Today the golden ratio is commonly used in everyday design, for example in the shapes of postcards, playing cards, advertising posters, wide-screen televisions, photographs, and cars
  47.
  48. ACTIVITY
  49. PHOTOGRAPH 3 EXAMPLES OF THE GOLDEN RATIO RULE
  50.
  51. TECHNICAL SKILLS TO IMPROVE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS
  52. There are 3 main variables when taking photographs....
  53. APERTURE - controls the size of the lens opening
  54. ISO - the sensitivity of the sensor
  55. SHUTTER SPEED - how long the shutter is open for
  56.
  57. The aperture value is numerical and represented with an 'f'
  58. The higher the f-stop (f16, f32) the smaller the hole
  59. THE BIGGER THE DEPTH OF FIELD (DEEP FOCUS)
  60. The lower the f-stop (f2, f2.8) the bigger the hole
  61. THE SMALLER THE DEPTH OF FIELD (SHALLOW FOCUS)
  62. To set the camera to Aperture priority use the 'AV' or 'A' setting or do it manually on the film SLR cameras
  63. f1.8 (Low aperture/ f-stop) = SHALLOW FOCUS
  64.
  65. If you want to create a shallow depth of field to create the shallow focus/ cinematic look you need a low aperture/ f-stop
  66.
  67. ACTIVITY
  68. Put the DSLR on AV mode
  69. Adjust to 'Manual Focus' (MF)
  70. Now try and get a blurry background by focusing on a subject and adjusting the 'f stop'
  71. Keep your camera still (tripod or table)
  72.
  73. ACTIVITY
  74. Use a tripod
  75. In pairs set your cameras to shutter priority (TV mode)
  76. REMEMBER to use a subject that is still/ stationary
  77. You have 10 minutes to photograph some motion blur images for this activity
  78. TIP - use the torch on your mobile phones
  79.
  80. ACTIVITY
  81. Pick a subject from around the room (object/ person) and photograph it/ them in a symmetrical composition
