  2. @Dash If you're interested in the college thing, I think you should be close to the Decatur campus for Georgia Perimeter College
  3. I went/(am attending?) to GPC, it's pretty affordable and very flexible with classes for the most part
  4. Alexander !KrysTaLpiAToday at 5:10 AM
  5. If he had any desire to improve himself he would have done something to that effect by now.
  6. FlorxToday at 5:10 AM
  7. There is no reason to say there is no room to improve in the future
  8. Alexander !KrysTaLpiAToday at 5:11 AM
  9. There is room.
  10. He's just managed to fill it all with his pointless existence.
  11. Most folks here actually need to put some effort into getting to college.
  12. FlorxToday at 5:12 AM
  13. GPC is a community college; it's dead easy to get into
  14. Walk in submit your legal forms
  15. Alexander !KrysTaLpiAToday at 5:12 AM
  16. That? "Community" colleges don't exist here.
  17. FlorxToday at 5:12 AM
  18. come back a week later do a placement test
  19. and then get told if you need to take the flunky courses are not
  20. Okay?
  21. Does that mean we can't have them? lmao
  22. What point are you trying to push
  23. Alexander !KrysTaLpiAToday at 5:13 AM
  24. It just devalues the whole swell of "Look ma! I got into college!"
  25. FlorxToday at 5:13 AM
  26. So what?
  27. Alexander !KrysTaLpiAToday at 5:14 AM
  28. I thought a college education was supposed to be a big deal.
  29. Now you make it look like any Tom, Dick or Harry can just waltz into a school with some papers and get in.
  30. FlorxToday at 5:17 AM
  31. I mean if you're trying to get into an ivy league school or some shit yeah it takes some effort
  32. But there's nothing wrong with pursuing affordable education if it's there to be had
  33. Alexander !KrysTaLpiAToday at 5:19 AM
  34. >affordable education if it's there to be had
  35. And people wonder what's wrong with your country.
  36. Nobody should be denied a good education simply because they can't wallet it.
  37. GIs get loads and loads of "benefits" at Uncle Sam's expense.
  38. But anyone else? No, fuck you. Cough up your tuition fees boy.
  39. FlorxToday at 5:22 AM
  40. I mean, community college will only get you an associates as far as "cheap" education goes
  41. Beyond that you'll have to pay larger tuition at a larger school
  42. As it is here
  43. Alexander !KrysTaLpiAToday at 5:22 AM
  44. >nerfing the less-fortunate by limiting their potential
  45. FlorxToday at 5:23 AM
  46. So, you seem to be talking both ways here
  47. First you knock on the idea that college should be easy to get into
  48. Now you're knocking on the idea that not all of college is easy to get into
  49. I'm having some difficulty reading through that.
  50. Alexander !KrysTaLpiAToday at 5:25 AM
  51. College shouldn't be easy to get into. Those who and no interest in and/or reject the idea of putting any real effort into their lives shouldn't be taking up seats that someone else could make use of.
  52.
  53. Someone who could make use of a college education shouldn't be denied one on the pathetic grounds of "You're poor".
  54. FlorxToday at 5:26 AM
  55. And how on earth would you enforce those two ideas in reconciliation?
  56. I mean, if you're smart/dedicated, no, you don't have to foot the bill on higher education, short of becoming a doctor/lawyer
  57. You'll ideally be able to apply for merit-based scholarships which will take you the rest of the way
  58. Alexander !KrysTaLpiAToday at 5:27 AM
  59. Limit the number of seats in college so there is more (academic) competition for academic advancement.
  60. Subsidise these few remaining seats such that those who deserve higher education can do so regardless of their bank account status.
  61. FlorxToday at 5:27 AM
  62. "yes", you are right there
  63. And that is part of the problem with our education system
  64. But it's not an easy thing to fix, enforce, or to evaluate on how well it's working
  65. And it also crowds out the middling people who aren't top% scores, have medium/low income, and still want to pursue higher education
  66. Simply put:
  67. People like me
  68. I don't make a lot of money, and I'm not a genius, but I still want to be able to pursue that
  69. Alexander !KrysTaLpiAToday at 5:30 AM
  70. The key idea is that you should never discriminate against the low-income fellas when it comes to education.
  71. What happened to the American Dream? The land of opportunity?
  72. FlorxToday at 5:30 AM
  73. I mean that's what the community colleges are supposed to serve for
  74. They get the cheap first two-three years of college, which allows for
  75. Allows for them to get acquainted with the college system as a whole, while not wasting money on the "undergrad" classes that everyone has to take, taking them at a major school
  76. IDeally from there, if you prove worth/mastery/intelligence/dedication
  77. You can apply for merit-based scholarships
  78. And remove the barrier of finance into higher-level schools
  79. People in lower income brackets also receive more in a couple grants that most people can apply for
  80. Alexander !KrysTaLpiAToday at 5:34 AM
  81. 8:31 PM] Florx: Allows for them to get acquainted with the college system as a whole, while not wasting money on the "undergrad" classes that everyone has to take, taking them at a major school
  82. Why not give them this at the high school level rather than expecting them to take a leap of faith at the college level.
  83. FlorxToday at 5:35 AM
  84. At a low income bracket, if you go to a community college, and have a 3.0+ GPA
  85. Those first two years are virtually free
  86. It's not really much a leap of faith
  87. At least, this is how it is in my state
  88. I can't speak for every region
  89. And actually, that particular thing does exist for High School
  90. Alexander !KrysTaLpiAToday at 5:36 AM
  91. And if the first two years don't work out? What then?
  92. FlorxToday at 5:36 AM
  93. We refer to it as duel enrollment
  94. I mean, then you/they weren't cut out for college? Under your system, they shouldn't have been there in the first place, because they would be taking up those valuable spots in higher education as you say
