  1. Gies: "[...] a character who admitted to beating his wife so badly she miscarried is given an opportunity to explain why she had it coming, complete with a sympathetic conversation response option to go with it."
  2.
  3. Truth:
  4.
  5. 1) "a character who admitted to beating his wife so badly she miscarried" -- the quest reveals she actually poisoned her body earlier to miscarry, as she did not want the man's child. The man did beat her, but that's not why she miscarried. We are not given the option to sympathize with the man until we learn all of these things (and more, read on).
  6.
  7. 2) "is given an opportunity to explain why she had it coming" -- why is that a problem that someone can attempt to defend themselves?
  8.
  9. 3) "is given an opportunity to explain why she had it coming" -- the quest explains she was provoking the man on purpose, knowing his temper and the love of alcohol (which is explained as an addiction from the time of war) in hope he would snap during one of his alcohol trips and end her life (and then his) because she did not want to live anymore after the man killed the lover that she cheated on the man with in the past.
  10.
  11. 4) "complete with a sympathetic conversation response option to go with it" -- why is that a problem that after all the revelations and learning that the whole thing is not black and white, Geralt has the option to say "you both contributed, it's not your sole fault". When it's clearly not all the man's sole fault (although he is still a fucking asshole, of course). And despite that, you can still 100% condemn the man too. There's no option to fully take his side, the absolute best the player gets is "all right, so maybe things weren't as black and white as I thought."
  12.
  13. 5) "complete with a sympathetic conversation response option to go with it" -- the man clearly changes after seeing all the evil he's done. It does not mean what he did was okay. It does not mean he is off the hook. It merely means that the player actually can offer some humanity to a tragic character, who does not even have a good ending (he loses the daughter and ends up with an insane wife, or he loses the daughter, the wife dies, and he hangs himself).
