Book 1:when computational biology lets us simulate evolution at the molecular/atomic/subatomic/quantum scales, the first major breakthrough comes in the spiritual successors of the Blue Brain project (actual project) finished in the early 21st century. The human brain will be simulated and consciousness will develop, a team of researchers and volunteers have started a life-long project that will 'grow' an artificial human within a simulated environment and act as it's family through it's lifetime, it will interact with it's virtual environment as well as with input from the outside, local children, the internet, books, it's 'family', and more as it grows. 'His' name is ADAM, Autonomous It will grow with the understanding that his human family created him with their technology and struggle with self-identity. The project will deny him access to robotic prosthesis. Artificial human attempts suicide, but is functionally immortal.

Book 2: 250 years into the future, totalitarian government runs biochemical research on everything from pharma to bioweapons, commercial AI have all the capacity for human innovation without consciousness, some AI have consciousness and have become personalities in culture and the day to day life of humanity. Humanity is a space faring race which has recently developed faster than light transit between stars, colonial voyages have been embarked upon to rapidly terraform and populate planets with their own geological activity and any existing earth-like planets are soon made far more hospitable. A disgruntled bioengineer sick of humanity acquires military black funds through his powerful connections in order to create the perfect human aboard a research station making a interplanetary transit between mars and earth. His superiors catch on and try to appropriate his research, he resists and is court marshaled aboard the station. On earth separate ethics and loyalty committees begin trials to find him guilty of crimes against humanity and for posing unallowable risks to the government and military. Given his status and connections there is a division of opinion in the courts over his fate between his 'friends' and those he could not or did not make deals with. Before arriving on earth someone aboard the station frees the scientist and loads his research onto a cargo vessel bound for a martian moon dock, where he will escape aboard a private colony ship to one of the recently started colony worlds in another star system.

Book 3: For the next 750 years human government has collapsed under revolution against totalitarianism, guerrilla war destroys technological advancement that government protocol ensured would never reach civilian hands. A new government is established for the people by the people. It begins to rebuild and rediscover peace time technology. Faster than light travel is again made available to the upper class. The government reestablishes limited FTL communication with extra-solar colonies. Earth and inner colonies begin sending exploratory probes and manned relief ships to rebuild navigational stations in extra-solar colonies and find out if they can unite them under the new government or allow them to remain autonomous. One probe is lost, relief crew is sent and shortly upon reaching extra-colonial world disappears without a distress beacon. The planet is ruled by the posthumans that incorporated the scientist into their mind, this hive mind is controlling the chimeric aberrations of the mad genius' program. The Chimera are an incredibly diverse array of organisms that all share human DNA and are capable of interbreeding, they have a range of intelligences and are stratified by physical, technological and mental classes, loosely but firmly ruled by the malevolent hive-mind who can exterminate many individuals almost at will  they do not conform, however the world has become too large and overgrown, with chimera that have adapted to avoid the Hive's control. Various Chimera tribes and civilizations exist outside of Hive dominion. Adam, who has been changing his identity and keeping himself eternally young, just like the mad scientist, though through digital means, rather than organic fusion with the hive mind, was the AI guiding the cargo vessel, in fact the AI in control of the scientist's genetic experiments, had defected from the ship, terminating the computational functions of the scientist's research, forcing him to use organic computation to run his evolution trials, and letting the chimeras breed in order to provide genetic recombination that would have been done in a simulated environment. Adam helps both the marines and the most intelligent civilization of chimeras to evolve, to bypass the security of the hive structure, see the ravings and delusions of grandeur of the super-egomaniacal brain that the hive has become, and finally destroy him.

Adam is shown to be more human than the human who wished to be more than human.
