  1. I tabbed into Charlie long enough to get him off the bus and out to the stop where Apollonia was waiting. When I returned, Mr. Gillan was still talking about his snowmobile accident. Why, I wondered, did he always try to sway me by describing a snowmobile accident? I'd never been on a snowmobile in my life. Why should I care that he said 60% of his bones are now made of metal?
  2. "I live in excruciating pain all the time. That's how much I care about this company. I understand what pain is, don't worry, I know how you feel. But you can't argue with B.J. on the calling floor."
  3. "Mr. Gillan, I need my breaks. My bravo's train was late. B.J. doesn't let us take breaks. I can't cite the statute just now, but you're the boss, you need to know these things better than I do."
  4. Gillan sighed. "I know, but it doesn't say you can take them whenever you want, you need to fold them into the breaks along with the lunch and ten minute breaks."
  5. "Mr. Gillan, you don't give us lunches."
  6. "I would if you were scheduled for more hours, but you said your schedule needs to be more flexible."
  7. "I never said that. I said I could be flexible. I haven't had a full five hour shift here in a month. That leaves me only one break, and I can't hit the head and tab Bravo off a late bus and eat my lunch in ten minutes, I've tried. Besides, the law says I get a break for tabbing."
  8. "Well, you and I read it differently."
  9. I gave up on that point. Gillan knew well enough he was wrong, but I needed the job. "B.J. pressures us to do things that are illegal. I'm not comfortable with that. You gave us the training yourself, you told us what's legal and what isn't. I think you need to give him the training again."
  10. "That could be," he said, nodding; he'd've made a great yes man. "I'll talk to him about it. But I should talk to him about it, not you. I can't have you arguing with him on the calling floor, it undermines his authority in front of the other employees."
  11. His authority to pressure us to break the law, I thought to myself. "So what should I do if he's trying to deny me a break and I need to get Bravo off a bus, or need to take my ten for lunch?" I don't think he caught I was still making the distinction. We take our victories where we can.
  12. "Let me talk to him about it."
  13. "And if you're not there? Sometimes you're not here, it's not like it can wait. I have to pay double fare if I tab out on the bus and have to wait the whole route to get back to my stop." I really need to find a way to say these things shorter. I can tell Gillan's losing interest. I repeat the first point: "You're not always here. Sometimes it's just B.J."
  14. "Then talk to him outside. You can't undermine him on the calling floor. He needs to keep his authority out there, and you threaten that when you argue with him."
