- Did you enjoy Vampire Survivors but thought, why isn't this also Diablo? Well worry no more, because now there's Halls of Torment Prelude! Dive into this free pre-game game as you take on the role of one of three generic protagonists, the swordsman, the archer, or the exterminator, and take on this massive pre-rendered land filled to the brim with waves of demonic demons and bad time skeletons. Start your adventure with the swordsman, a simple man with a sword, except this sword slashes a wave of projected ass kicking directly at the hordes of skeletons, blob monsters, and all of the pixelated monstrosities that are launching themselves at you from the four corners of heck. After you've completed some arbitrary kill quotas, you'll unlock the Archer, a simple woman with a bow, except unlike other Survivor's games, your weapon doesn't fire off by itself. The power is yours once again, and it feels as good as you thought it would to mow down those undead heathens with your own finger presses. But if you really want to heat things up, the Exterminator has a goddamn flamethrower letting you leave only a trail of crispy crunchy demon stir-fry in your wake. This trio can also augment their abilities with magic spells obtained from chests, bosses, or just the regular old ground, turning every step you take into a maelstrom of screen clearing chaos. Halls of Torment Prelude, the prelude to Halls of Torment which is coming sometime in Q2 2023, which is the queue we're in now, but it's not out yet. From the moment I saw this game in action, I knew what it was going for, looking like Diablo but playing like Vampire Survivors. Yet I didn't even begin to comprehend how addictive that would be. I don't know if it's the nostalgia or the killing of thousands of enemies across a run, but this game is hard to put down. The only thing that helped me do it was knowing that the full game was coming sometime down the line. I'm still not sure if it's going to have the same expansive progression that Vampire Survivors has given the basic quest system and the levels that don't currently have much to explore, but with the same kind of in-game progression, meta progression, and the addition of armor you can find and customize each run that already has a great starting point. The best part is, this prelude is free and it gives you a nice little taste of what's to come in that uncertain quarterly release range. So you too can get hooked on it and have to go to video game rehab. two can get hooked on it and have to go to video game rehab.
