  43. The student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) is a skill training program organized with the aim to of exposing students of higher institutions to acquire industrial experience that they are likely to come across in the near future. Through this scheme student learned the practical aspects of the theories taught in the higher institutions.
  44. BRIEF HISTORY OF SIWES
  45. It was in this view that SIWES was introduced to the Industrial and Educational sector. SIWES is an acronym for Student's Industrial Work Experience Scheme. SIWES was established in the year 1973 in order to improve the standard of education in Nigeria in order to achieve the needed technological advancement.
  46. The program was initially introduced in Nigeria by the Industrial Training Fund (I.T.F.) which was established under Decree 47 of 1972 by the Supreme Military Council, headed by General Yakubu Gowon. The Decree was billed to take effect from 31st March, 1974 and had as its core objective, the gradual reduction of the percentage of foreign participation in most of Nigeria economic activities, accompanied by a systematic integration of locally oriented skilled manpower into the vast economic sector. To actualize this, the Federal Government embarked upon a major industrialization process involving the construction of oil refineries, iron and steel industries and textile plants.
  47. OBJECTIVES OF SIWES
  48. 1. To provide students with industrial skills and needed experience while the course of study; 2. To create conditions and circumstances, which can be as close as possible to the actual workflow;
  49. 3. To prepare specialists who will be ready for any working situations immediately after graduation;
  50. 4. To teach students the techniques and methods of working with facilities and equipment that may not be available within the walls of an educational institution;
  51. 5. To give students the ability to try and apply the given knowledge.
