- Grandia Redux on the Playstation Portable
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- This guide will show the exact steps I took to make the Grandia Redux Hack work on my PSP. It will go over the patching of the disk as well as the softmodding of the console.
- Disclaimer: This was created on the 2004 model but shoud work the same for the 100x 200x and 300x models of the PSP. It involves the usual risks of softmodding although the method used is said to be very safe and wont cause permanent changes to your firmware.
- !THIS GUIDE IS NOT GOING TO WORK WITH THE PSP GO OR PSP STREET VERSION!
- What is required:
- - Playstation Portable with at least 2gb of storage.
- - Grandia Disk/Iso file from the NTSC US region.
- - a PC obviously
- What will be needed and downloaded: (Version used):
- - Grandia Redux Patch files (Disk 1: 3.1/Disk 2: 3.0)
- - ppf-o-matic (3.0)
- - "PRO" Custom PSP Firmware (6.60 PRO C fix 3) <- Best version for PSX compatibility
- - popstation GUI (3.00 Beta)
- What might be needed:
- - Original Firmware (6.60) For updating from an older firmware
- - Chronoswitch (7.0) if you are on firmware 6.61
- - photopea.com For creating the coverart and decoration elements
- - InfraRecorder Portable (0.52 Rev. 3) For ripping the disk image off the original disk
- I compiled all the files (aside from the actual Disk Image) and my Icon/Image Files into a .zip file but the software can also be downloaded manually:
- Password for the ZIP File is: 123456
- ======================================================================================================================================
- Step 0: Getting the Iso from the Original Disk
- - Dowload/Extract the "InfraRecorderPortable" folder
- - Run the "InfraRecorderPortable.exe"
- - Insert the Games CD 1
- - Click on "Read Disk"
- - Select the drive with the game disk inserted
- - Set a path to where the disk image will be saved to
- - Hit OK and let the programm image the disk
- - Do the same with CD 2
- Sidenote:
- Test the read iso file by running it in an emulator like epsxe. If the game boots up the imaging of the Game should have been successfull
- -------------------------------------------------------------------
- Step 1: Creating the Redux Disk Image
- - Dowload/Extract the "ppf-o-matic" folder
- - Start the ppf-o-matic programm located in the "ppf-o-matic" folder
- - Set the ISO for the First CD Image
- - Set the Patch file to the .ppf file for the first disk (Located in the Archive folder)
- - Click on Apply and wait for it to finish. (Warning this will patch the file and is pretty difficult to reverse afterwards so i suggest using a copy of it and renaming it to Redux beforehand.)
- - Repeat for CD2 accordingly
- RECCOMENDED:
- Try out the created ISO file by starting it up on an emulator like epsxe. Start a new game and after the Cutscenes are over run to the Port of Parm and check the TIPP option on the save point. If it reads "Welcome to Grandia Redux" the Patching was successfull.
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Step 2: Preparing the Playstation
- If your Playstation is already softmodded and capable of running eboot files you can skip to step 4
- The goal for this step is to get the Playstation to the Original Firmware 6.60 so we can execute the custom firmware which allows us to run the game.
- There are two paths you can go down to get to the firmware.
- To check what firmware you are running navigate your PSP to the "System settings" and then to the "System information"
- If you are running firmware 6.61 you will need to downgrade using the Chronoswitch Software.
- -Dowload/Extract the "ChronoswitchDowngrade" folder
- -Connect your PSP to your Computer using the USB Port
- and Enable the USB Connection on the PSP
- -A new device should show up in your explorer
- Open the console and in there open the PSP folder and then the GAME folder
- -Copy the contents of the "ChronoswitchDowngrade" folder from the extracted folder into the GAME folder located on the Console
- After the transfer is completed you can disconect the psp from the computer and navigate to the games section on your psp
- you should see a new "game" called Chronoswitch Downgrader
- -Run the Downgrader
- After that it should display a black screen with white text.
- It should say that it will attemmpt to downgrade the firmware to 6.60
- -Press the X button to confirm
- It will show another warning because downgrading the firmware involves flashing the console.
- It is reccomended to plug the console into its charger before beginning the process.
- When you enter the Update procedure you can accept the EULA and follow the instructions on screen.
- After the process is done it will reboot.
- Check the System information in the System setting menue to verify that you are now running on firmware version 6.60
- If all of that is done you can remove the copied files from the GAME directory again
- If you are running on a firmware below 6.60 you can just install the official Firmware patch to version 6.60
- -Dowload/Extract the "6_60 Patch" patch folder
- -Connect your PSP to your Computer using the USB Port
- and Enable the USB Connection on the PSP
- -A new device should show up in your explorer
- Open the PSP and in there open the GAME folder
- -Copy the UPDATE folder into the PSPs Storage
- -Disconnect the PSP from the Computer
- -Navigate to the games section and select the "PSP Update ver 6.60"
- You can check the new Firmware in the System settings again.
- Your console should now be ready to be softmodded.
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Step 3: Softmodding the Playstation
- -Dowload/Extract the "Custom Firmware" folder
- -Connect your PSP to your Computer using the USB Port
- and Enable the USB Connection on the PSP
- -A new device should show up in your explorer
- Open the PSP
- -Copy the Folders PSP and seplugins into it
- -Connect your Playstation to its charger and remove any UMD disk you might have in it.
- -Navigate to the Memory Stick
- -3 new Games should have appeared: "CPIL Flasher for PRO-C", "660 PRO-C Fast Recovery" and the PRO update
- -Lauch the PRO Update
- If everything was successfull up to this point you should now see a black screen with white text: "PRO-C by Team PRO"
- -Press the X button to launch the CFW (Custom FirmWare)
- If your console is supported it will ask you to press the X button again to start the CFW
- -Confirm by pressing X
- The console should now reboot
- Now your Playstation is softmodded. To confirm that the process worked you can navigate to your system settings on your PSP and check the System Information. It should read "6.60 PRO-C"
- Sidenote:
- Softmodding the console like this will NOT apply the custom firmware permanently. If you fully restart the PSP (not just put it to sleep) it will return to the Original version.
- Whenever you reboot the console you can either run the "PRO Update" again or run the "660 PRO_C Fast Recovery" this will return the console to its softmodded state.
- There are ways to get it installed permanently but I wont go into detail about that here since it is a bit more difficult.
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Step 4(Optional): Installing the POPSloader plugin
- -Dowload/Extract the POPSloader folder
- -Connect your PSP to your Computer using the USB Port
- and Enable the USB Connection on the PSP
- -A new device should show up in your explorer
- Open the PSP
- -Copy the contents into the seplugins folder on your console
- This Plugin will allow you to change the version of POPS the internal PSX emulator. It is accessed by starting the Game while holding the R button on the console.
- For running Grandia I reccomend to run at version 3.71
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Step 5(Optional): Creating the Icons and Images for the PSP Interface
- This step is entirely optional. If you just want some basic imagery you can use the Files I have Prepared in the "Prepared images" Folder. I do not own the pictures and credit goes to the respective creator of said Images.
- If you do want to create your own in the "Image Template" folder there are Photoshop Templates and Demo files from Original Playstation Games.
- At the time of Writing you can use the free online suite "photopea.com" to open and edit the Photoshop files if you dont own Adobe Photoshop.
- The reccomended Images to create are:
- -The Thumbnail icon called "ICON0.PNG" with a resolution of up to 144 by 80 pixels. This will be the icon in the menue of your Playstation Portable
- -The Information image called "PIC0.PNG" with a resolution of up to 480 by 272 pixels. This will be displayed as addtional information when you hover the game.
- -The background image called "PIC1.PNG" with a resolution of up to 480 by 272 pixels. This is displayed in the background when hovering the image
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Step 6: Converting the Disk Images to PSP executables
- -Dowload/Extract the "popstationGUI" folder
- -Run the PopstationGUI.exe
- -Click on the "Browse..." button and locate the Patched Grandia Redux file.
- -Set your desired output folder using the "Select...".
- -Set the compression level to 9 (In theory it should work with any compression level but for me the game only ever worked with this setting)
- -You can keep the Game Title
- If you want to set up the custom images created in the optional Step 5 you can click the "Customize the EBOOT (+)" button.
- if you dont want to do that you can skip the next steps and just click on the "Go..." button in the lower middle.
- The Customization menue is pretty self explainatory.
- Import the three files created in step 5 and click on the "GO..." button.
- Repeat the Steps for the second disk.
- Both CDs should have created two seperate "EBOOT.PBP" files These must not be renamed and kept in seperate Folders to not confuse them.
- IMPORTANT:
- Do not uncheck any of the boxes next to the filenames. In theory it should allow for just not including them in the final game file but when trying to do so the PSP reported a corrupt game file. Leaving the files empty will result in the default images from the PopstationGUI programm to be loaded which work fine.
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Step 7: Transferring the Game files to the PSP
- -Open the Folders containing the "EBOOT.PBP" files from step
- -Connect your PSP to your PC again...
- -Open the PSP folder on the console
- -Open the Game folder on the console
- -Create two folders named "Grandia_Redux_CD1" and "Grandia_Redux_CD2"
- -Copy the "EBOOT.PBP" files into the respective folders on your console
- After the transfer is completed you should be done. You can exit the USB Mode and try to run the copied games. If the game reports invalid copyright protection information you should check if the softmod installed in step 3 is still working correctly by checking the firmware version in your system settings.
- ==============================================================================================================================================================
- To check if everything was successfull start up the game create a new save and watch through the intro cutscene. Once you get control over Justin go to The Port of Parm and check the TIPP on the Save Point. If it reads "Welcome to Grandia Redux" you now have installed the Game onto your console successfully
